Marina Gibson is a certified Single and Double Handed Fly Fishers International casting instructor, author of Cast Catch Release, guide, and passionate conservationist. She founded The Northern Fishing School at Swinton Estate in 2019, now teaching over 400 people annually, and co-founded the Cancer and Pisces Trust, supporting cancer sufferers through angling and the outdoors. After leaving city

life to pursue fly fishing full time, Marina built a global following of 180K+, using her platform to promote salmon conservation, environmental awareness, and the wellbeing benefits of fishing. She is an ambassador for LOOP Tackle, YETI, Costa Sunglasses, Atlantic Salmon Trust, GWCT, Angling Trust, and Tackling Minds, and serves as a trustee for River Action UK. Marina has spent over a decade hosting women’s and children’s fishing events, and in 2025 co-founded Little Waders, a family-focused initiative encouraging parents and children to learn and fish together. Her book, Cast Catch Release, was published internationally in 2024, and she and her husband, Stephan Dombaj (Fly Fishing Nation Media), now lease Bywell Salmon Fishing on the River Tyne. I had a great lesson with at . We covered how to approach the water, how wind direction influences cast selection, stance, and the three essentials of Spey casting. She absolutely nailed the double Spey (for a downstream cast), snap C and single Spey (for upstream casts), especially focusing on the single Spey over the snap C for lower summer water conditions and lighter lines. We also worked on mending, retrieving, and plenty more throughout the session.

Aria (on my back) was surprisingly helpful when it came to pointing out anchor placement!

Mills was a pleasure to teach, such a talented caster and a fast learner (and the most well behaved dog!).

Something that made all the difference this time sea trout fishing in Argentina was the RIO Trout Spey Line. As dusk came and the light started to fade, that long orange marker between the head and running line made it unbelievably easy to see exactly where your overhang was. Highly recommend and not an ad 😃

Thank you Eoin Fairgrieve for organising such an amazing show - Tweed Salmon Festival. There were kids learning and catching fish all weekend, brilliant demos from casters and tiers, conservation groups spreading awareness, loads of kit to try, and people chatting, learning, and connecting all weekend!

I did a demo with Fly Fishing Nation and although this was our first time doing this together I think we will be doing more! Thank you to .bird for the photos!

Sarah Ronholt and I ran an FFI Women Connect program - thank you so much to everyone who joined us, we had so much fun with you! While we cover a lot on fishing days, sometimes a classroom setting is best for learning to knots and tying flies (no distractions!).
