Curling Competition in Gargheh, Kabul
On the morning of Friday, January 17, 2024, a friendly curling competition took place at Band Gargheh, located in Kabul. The match saw teams from Kabul and Maidan Wardak competing against each other on the outdoor icy rinks. This event was part of an ongoing effort to promote curling as a sport in Afghanistan, particularly in areas where winter sports have not been as widely known.
The competition was a closely contested affair, with both teams showing excellent skill and strategy throughout the eight rounds. However, it was the Kabul curling team that ultimately came out on top, securing a victory with 5 points. The Maidan Wardak team, despite their strong performance, could not overcome the tactical plays of their opponents and finished the match without scoring as highly.
This friendly match marked a significant moment for local curling enthusiasts, as it highlighted the growing interest in ice sports in Afghanistan, where curling has traditionally not been a prominent sport. Organizers hope that such events will help develop a competitive curling scene in the country and inspire more young athletes to take up the sport.
The Band Gargheh ice rink, a popular venue for winter sports in Kabul, provided a stunning backdrop for the match. Spectators gathered along the rink to cheer for their local teams, adding a festive atmosphere to the event. The players from both teams displayed remarkable sportsmanship, making the competition both thrilling and enjoyable for all in attendance.
Looking forward, the Kabul curling team will continue to train and prepare for future competitions, with hopes of representing Afghanistan on an international stage. For now, though, the victory at Band Gargheh serves as an exciting milestone for curling in Kabul and the broader Afghan sports community.
