A Message to African Students Abroad: Let’s Not Fail Our Families or God
Every year, many African parents despite living in poverty make great sacrifices to send their children abroad to study. They hope that by investing in one child, the whole family will rise. They sell land, take loans, borrow from friends, and sometimes go hungry just so their child can have a better future.
Unfortunately, some students forget this once they arrive abroad. Instead of focusing on their studies, they get carried away by partying, drinking, chasing women or men, trying to live a flashy lifestyle to impress others.
Let me share a true story. When I was studying abroad, there was a fellow citizen named Alvaro. His father was poor, but he believed in Alvaro. He said, “I will put all my resources into this boy so that he can help his younger siblings later.” But once Alvaro got abroad, he started pretending he came from a wealthy family. He was wasting money on alcohol, women, and a fake lifestyle. His father kept sending money, but Alvaro kept spending recklessly.
One day, the father decided to travel and see things with his own eyes. Sadly, when he arrived, he discovered that Alvaro had not even enrolled in school. The man was heartbroken. He returned home and said, “Let me stop wasting money and focus on the younger ones.”
Alvaro came back home with nothing—no degree, no skills, only shame. And sadly, instead of accepting responsibility, he started blaming witchcraft. He said he was cursed, or that people had used "juju" against him. But let’s be honest: it was not witchcraft. It was poor choices, lack of discipline, and disrespect for the opportunity he was given.

Chaque année, de nombreux parents africains, malgré leur pauvreté, font d’énormes sacrifices pour envoyer leurs enfants étudier à l’étranger. Ils espèrent qu’en investissant dans un seul enfant, toute la famille pourra s’élever. Certains vendent leurs terres, contractent des prêts, empruntent de l’argent à des proches, et parfois se privent de tout juste pour offrir un avenir meilleur à leur enfant.
Mais malheureusement, certains étudiants oublient cela une fois arrivés à l’étranger. Au lieu de se concentrer sur leurs études, ils tombent dans les fêtes, l’alcool, les relations sans valeur, et une vie d’apparence pour impressionner les autres.
Je veux vous raconter une histoire vraie. Quand j’étais étudiant à l’étranger, il y avait un compatriote nommé Alvaro. Son père, bien que pauvre, croyait fermement en lui. Il avait dit : « Je vais investir tout ce que j’ai dans ce garçon pour qu’il puisse aider ses petits frères plus t**d. » Mais une fois arrivé à l’étranger, Alvaro a commencé à se comporter comme un enfant de riche. Il dépensait de l’argent dans l’alcool, les femmes, et un style de vie inutile. Il n’était même pas inscrit à l’université.
Son père, inquiet, a décidé un jour de voyager pour voir ce qui se passait. Une fois sur place, il a découvert la vérité : Alvaro n’était pas étudiant du tout. Le père a eu le cœur brisé. Il est rentré au pays et a dit : « Je préfère maintenant me concentrer sur les plus jeunes. »
Alvaro est rentré au pays les mains vides : sans diplôme, sans compétence, sans avenir juste la honte, non seulement pour lui-même, mais pour toute sa famille.
Et au lieu d’assumer ses responsabilités, il a commencé à accuser la sorcellerie. Il disait être maudit, ou que des gens avaient « travaillé contre lui ». Mais soyons honnêtes : ce n’était pas la sorcellerie. C’était le manque de discipline, le mauvais choix, et l’orgueil.
