Da queste immagini lo direste che da bambino Joseph Pilates abbia sofferto di salute cagionevole? Di struttura gracile per natura, contrasse infatti diverse malattie come febbre reumatica, rachitismo e asma; così sin da ragazzino s’interessò allo studio dell'anatomia umana e si dedicò a sport come sci, arti marziali, immersioni subacquee e ogni tipo di disciplina atletica per rafforzare il suo fisico e aumentare le sue difese immunitarie. Il risultato? Joseph riuscì a eccellere e a superare i suoi limiti fisici, e questo fu decisivo per l'indirizzo che avrebbe preso poi la sua vita.
