Most leaders believe their influence comes from the clarity of what they say.
The Mehrabian Model tells a different story.
In emotionally charged communication, research shows that 55% of impact comes from body language and physical presence, 38% from tone of voice, and just 7% from the actual words.
The implication for senior leaders is significant. You can deliver a perfectly constructed message and still lose the room. Not because your argument was weak, but because your nervous system was communicating something your words were not.
If your body signals threat while your words signal confidence, people trust the body.
This is why executive presence is not a performance skill. It is an inside job. The most credible communicators are not the ones who have rehearsed the most. They are the ones whose internal state and external message are aligned.
In my work as an executive coach in Dubai with VP to C-suite leaders, this is one of the most consistent patterns I encounter. Communication training alone rarely closes the gap. The deeper work does.
