Horn Shark - Heterodontus francisci
La Jolla Cove

The horn shark gets its name from its predominantly blunt head adorned with high ridges above the eyes, almost like eyebrows. It also possesses large spines on its 1st and 2nd dorsal fins, which can be seen in the image. Horn Sharks will mate during December/January and then return to begin depositing their eggs among the rocks. Hiding these eggs deep into cracks and crevices so that they may grow in peace. The main threat to these animals comes from ocean pollution, especially around highly populated beach communities, as these animals rarely travel more than 5 miles from their home.
