The main point of this video is that the loading position is the key to a good serve (together with the toss).

However, I also want to touch on another topic here. In this video, I’m serving using a platform stance, even though my natural motion is a pinpoint stance. I believe that during development, every player should try serving with both stances in order to determine which one suits them better, while at the same time developing coordination for both.

What you need to understand about stances is that one is not inherently better than the other, it’s simply a matter of which one fits you best. This is also supported by statistics, as among the greatest servers in history we can find players who successfully used both stances.

Mistakes:

1. Forehand grip – This grip prevents you from using long axis rotation for extra power during the serve, as well as properly serving a kick or slice serve.

2. Foot around – While there are exceptions, ā€œfoot aroundā€ will cause your hips to be at the wrong angle in relation to the baseline, which often leads to overrotation.

3. No coil – To avoid this hip position, make sure to coil and sit into your back hip.

4. Elbow forward – Your elbow and chest should be facing upward to ensure a proper racquet drop.

5. Overrotated at contact – We must avoid being parallel to the net at contact; typically, poor loading is the cause of this. You want to open through contact, not before!

6. No long axis rotation – The lack of long axis rotation (internal shoulder rotation + forearm pronation) is directly linked to overrotation. Another reason why you want to stay more side-on at contact.

7. Landing on or behind the line – This is usually a sign of poor loading, and to fix this, we need to go back to the trophy position and see what’s wrong there!
