Younger years to sixth form: how boarding life grows up alongside your child π±β‘οΈπ³
Boarding in the younger years looks quite different from boarding in sixth form, and that's by design. Every school sets its own rules, but here's the general shape of how independence builds, stage by stage π
π± Joining in the younger years
Often a shared room, a set time for prep each evening, and houseparents close by. Plenty of structure, so settling in feels simple π‘
πΏ The middle years
More say over free time, a fuller calendar of training and fixtures, and friendships that make the house feel like home β½
π³ Lower sixth
Often a single study bedroom, more freedom at weekends, and prep managed more independently, with staff still on hand whenever it's needed π
π Upper sixth
Many students take on responsibilities in the house, such as helping newer boarders find their feet π€
The structure eases off as your child grows, and the care stays constant throughout. When you visit, it's worth asking how each year group's routine works in that school's houses.
Save this for when you're thinking about which year to join π
