Darjeeling Cricket Club

Darjeeling Cricket Club The UAE’s oldest amateur cricket club, based in Dubai. Western Expat club, members are cricketers from the UK, SA, AUS & NZ. "Click 'About'! and/or Sat.

Founded in 1969, the Club was originally based on grounds made available by the then Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid. Our grounds, clubhouse and bar were on Al Khail Road, adjacent to the Dubai Exiles rugby ground and Dubai Country Club, and we were a key part of the expatriate scene for nearly 40 years. We played regular fixtures against local teams, touring sides and itinerant ships, and hosted an

annual International Sixes tournament. Most good cricketers in the UAE have probably played at our former grounds at some point, as have several members of the NZ team of the '90s. We also have a proud history of youth development, including many juniors into our sides and coaching several school teams. We also hosted several Emirates charity matches and coaching sessions with the likes of Rod Marsh, Joel Garner and Mike Gatting, and assisted the UAE youth team with free access to our grounds, nets and facilities. In 2008 we lost our grounds to the Meydan development and spent over two years playing occasional matches at Zabeel Park and other grounds as we searched for a new base. In Jan 2011 we resumed playing regular Friday cricket at Sharjah English School (SES) on a newly-laid astroturf wicket with a grass outfield. In Jan 2013 we moved to the county-standard turf pitches at the ICC Academy in Dubai Sports City while retaining playing privileges at SES, and in June last year we moved from SES to Dubai College. Lately the Club has seen a resurgence with an influx of new members complementing our roster of members with long tenures, and a year-round fixture list. We play through the year, mostly 20/25/30-over matches and a few 40s on Fri. afternoons, and net every Tue. from 8-9 pm at the ICC Academy. We plan to play 70-odd matches this year with our 60+ playing members who have played quality club cricket in their home countries, often elsewhere too. For cultural reasons we are selective about membership, and as a private club, reserve the right. Annual membership is AED 1,500 and we don't employ professional cricketers. We are known in UAE cricket circles for our heritage and for playing honest cricket in the spirit of the game. The Club also has an active social aspect with pints at the pub after nets and matches, a pub quiz team, tables at testimonial dinners for international cricketers, group trips and tours to international matches, periodic evening socials, an Annual Awards Dinner and an Annual General Meeting. We tour selectively and are one of a few teams to have participated in the Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes in Thailand for 28 consecutive years. Last year we had our best performance there ever, winning the Bromley Shield. Directions to the ICC Academy: http://www.iccglobalcricketacademy.com/info.aspx?id=53&cid=14

Chiang Mai Sixes - Gymkhana Ground Restoration Appeal

Every year the Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes attracts around thirty competing teams, both men and women, to the annual event along with friends and supporters. The tournament is staged at the Gymkhana Club Cricket Ground in the city, which also stages regular local and junior matches.

In October 2024, Chiang Mai was hit by some of the worst flooding on record with homes, properties, and businesses bearing the brunt of the damage. The Ping River deposited many inches of thick silt and mud on the Gymkhana Club grounds causing utter devastation. It caused unprecedented damage to the ground with much of our equipment being ruined or requiring extensive repairs.

The committee has come up with a costed plan to put things right. It will cost in the region of 900,000 Baht, which is around GBP 21,000 or AUD 42,000 if everything goes to plan.

Work has already got underway with the silt and mud being removed. Timings are also problematic, as the laying of new turf, which forms part of the plan, needs lots of water which might not be freely available as the region now enters its dry season. The ground and golf course are without an irrigation system, so it is likely to take up to two years to complete fully, owing to the seasons and climate in northern Thailand.

It has taken many manhours of work to date, with cleaning materials, tools, and equipment hire, which have already been paid for. We require a second-hand tractor, new fridges, esky’s and bar and office furniture, with the costs for laying and watering the new turf, and repairs to the roller, pump, new scoreboard, as well as equipment hire to be paid for. It is going to be a herculean task, but we are determined to succeed.

We are appealing to anyone who can donate whatever amount, to help us get the beautiful ground back to its previous best. There are three ways you can do this.

There is a GoFundMe page for both Australia and the UK where we have trusted individuals, Stewart Ashby and Michael Burns collecting the money with Rob Bernard overseeing the process, so that we can provide regular progress updates.

You may have noticed we have been a little quiet on social media recently.

Very sadly a few weeks ago we lost our dear friend, social media guru and all round wonderful human Javed. His smile would light up any game, his passion would inspire everyone and his love for his family, friends, the game of cricket and Arsenal was infectious.

Please join Javed’s family, friends and the Dubai cricket community on Saturday 26th October, at the ICC Academy as we celebrate the life of a truly great human.

Top performances from 2023-24 Season:

The one and only , Darjeeling’s self-proclaimed best bowler, has once again made his mark on the cricketing world. Ben bowled a ‘masterful’ 3-32 against the Hurricanes.
For those unfamiliar, Ben’s got this unique ability to keep both teams on their toes, with his artistic interpretations of the wide ball rule. 🎨
Some say he’s just being generous, giving the opposition those bonus runs to keep the game interesting.

Against the Hurricanes, Ben was at his absolute best, snagging 3 crucial wickets that turned the game in our favor! 🏏

Huge shoutout to for their continued support!

Top Performances from 2023-24 Season:

Facing fierce bowling and mounting pressure, Kash stood tall like a rock in the storm. His gritty 60 against Asos Rainbow was a show of determination, resilience, and true team spirit. When the game was on the line, he held the innings together and anchored us to safer shores. 🏏💪

Huge Shoutout to our sponsors for their continued support.

Top performances from 2023-24 Season:

, our resident giant, wandered onto the cricket pitch and must’ve thought he was on a golf course! He was swinging his bat like a driver, sending balls flying as if aiming for the green. With a colossal 76 off 42 balls, the Loose Cannons were probably wondering if they needed a golf cart to catch up! 🏏⛳️

Huge shoutout to our sponsors for the continued support!

Top Performances from 2023-24 Season: catapults the ball into orbit during his swashbuckling innings, scoring an electrifying 89 off just 53 balls. 🚀

Ninja smashed an incredible 89 runs off 53 balls against the Stallions! Never seen anyone hit the ball that hard! Pretty sure the ball is now contemplating its life choices and considering a career change. 🏏🚀
