In many Indian homes, these sentences are considered “normal parenting.” But repeated comparison, guilt, criticism and emotional invalidation can shape how a child sees themselves.
Years later, it may show up as people-pleasing, guilt, low self-worth, fear of failure and difficulty setting boundaries.
You can love your parents and still choose to heal the patterns that hurt you. ❤️ “Why can’t you be like Sharma ji’s son/daughter?”
→ Creates comparison, insecurity & “I’m not good enough.”
“You’ll never do anything in life.”
→ Slowly becomes self-doubt and fear of failure.
“Because I’m your parent. Just listen to me.”
→ Teaches them to suppress their voice and needs.
“You’re too sensitive. Stop crying.”
→ Teaches them that emotions are something to hide.
“After everything we’ve done for you…”
→ Creates guilt around saying NO, choosing themselves, or setting boundaries.
“Log kya kahenge?”
→ Teaches them to seek approval instead of trusting themselves.
“Don’t talk back to elders.”
→ They may grow up afraid of confrontation—even when they’re being disrespected.
“You’re so selfish.”
→ They become people-pleasers who feel guilty for having their own needs.
Sometimes childhood words don’t stay in childhood.
They become the inner voice you carry into adulthood.
