Olympic champion. Harder entry. Same air time. Lower score. 👀
At the Grand Prix de France, Mikhail Shaidorov comes into his triple Axel from a difficult entry, stays too long on his forward outside edge and pushes too hard: he projects forward instead of going up with the jump. −1.26. At the Olympics in Milan, a shorter, sharper push. Same air time, and the jump goes up. +1.94.
Skaters: a bigger push doesn’t make a bigger jump. Timing does. Parents: a strong jump isn’t always a good jump. Watch where it goes. Coaches: when a jump travels, check the length of the takeoff before the strength.
Rule 17 of 40: Timing beats strength.

She lands triple Axels in competition. So why did this one pop? 👀
Look at the entry: almost a straight line. With no curve to build the rotation, the arms and shoulders take over, twist too early, and the rotation gets out of control.
Skaters: let the edge start the rotation, not your arms.
Parents: watch the path before the jump, not just the air.
Coaches: a straight entry often hides behind an over-twist.
Rule 07 of 40.

Why do some jumps look forced before they even leave the ice? 👀
Look at the last steps. When they travel one way and the takeoff wants another, the skater has to fight their own momentum: the shoulders check, the speed drops, the timing breaks.
When the steps flow in the same direction as the takeoff, the jump uses that energy instead of fighting it. Same rotation, half the effort.
Skaters: feel where your last steps are taking you. Parents: watch the moment just before the jump, not only the landing. Coaches: fix the road, and the jump often fixes itself.
Rule 01 of 40: Respect the direction of the steps before the jump. All the rules in the “40 Rules” highlight.

The jump doesn’t start at the takeoff. It starts with the steps that build the position.
Her entry isn’t perfect, but every step puts her where she needs to be. That’s what most skaters miss.
In my free guide, I show the most common preparation mistakes and how to fix them.

Skaters, parents and coaches: what do you watch first on a jump?

19/10/2026

Lutz, flip, Axel… they look like completely different jumps. But look closer: same takeoff mechanics, same rotational move. 👀
Most skaters work on each jump separately. When something goes wrong, they fix one jump, then the next, then the next. That takes years.
The faster way is to master the foundation they all share. Improve it once, and every jump benefits.
⛸️ Skaters: train smarter, not just harder. 👨‍👩‍👧 Parents: understand what really drives progress. 🎯 Coaches: one key phase to build your teaching around.

The 4T as a spring 🌀
Sofia Smagina’s quad toe at the Russian Grand Prix (Stage II) is a great lesson in how a toe-assisted jump really works.
Yes, there’s a full blade assist. But look at what happens at the pick: she doesn’t just tap the ice, she absorbs the push, loads the energy into the ice… and releases it as fast as possible.
Load → store → release. That’s the spring.
👉 Skaters: on your next toe loop, feel the pick as a loading moment, not just a contact. 👉 Coaches & parents: watch the timing between the tap and the takeoff. That’s where the height comes from.

3 mistakes I see in almost every skater’s jumps, from beginners to internationals.
👉 Skaters: one of these is probably costing you rotation right now.
👉 Parents: these are the details a coach’s eye catches, and video makes them visible.
👉 Coaches: a quick checklist before your next session.
📘 The fixes, frame by frame, are in my free guide “The 3 common mistakes”. Link in bio.

Massive height. Heavy twist. 👀 Kamila Valieva’s Lutz isn’t just about power. Watch the toe pick: the rotation starts before she leaves the ice.
1️⃣ Wide opening on the right side
2️⃣ Pre-rotational twist driven by the toe pick
3️⃣ Full blade assist
4️⃣ High snap of the left leg
Skaters: watch your toe pick, not just your height. Coaches & parents: this is what slow motion reveals that the naked eye misses.

Most skaters want to skip straight to the triple. 🚀 But here’s the truth: your single IS your triple, in slow motion.
This skater started with an unstable single and double toe loop. We didn’t chase rotations. We worked the entrance and the details until the jump was clean.
The result? A massive triple. 💥
Single, double, triple, even quad: the mechanics don’t change. Only the speed does.
👉 Skaters: respect your singles, they build your triples. 👉 Parents: “easy” jumps in practice are not wasted time. They’re the foundation. 👉 Coaches: fix the single, and the triple follows.
💬 What jump are you rebuilding from the single right now? 📩 Want a technical eye on your jumps? Link in bio.
