YASUHIRO YAMASH*TA — A LEGEND WHO DEFINED JUDO 🥋🇯🇵

203 consecutive victories.
1 Olympic gold medal.
4 World Championship titles.
9 consecutive All-Japan Championship titles.

But Yamash*ta’s greatness cannot be measured by numbers alone. His technique, strength, composure and fighting spirit made him one of the most dominant judoka in history.

Even after suffering a serious leg injury at the 1984 Olympic Games, he continued fighting—and became Olympic champion.

Is Yasuhiro Yamash*ta the greatest judoka of all time?

Tsunejirō Tomita (富田 常次郎) was one of the earliest and most important students of Jigoro Kano, the founder of Kodokan Judo. He is considered a pioneer who helped spread and legitimize judo in its early years.

He was born in 1865 in Japan. One of the first students of Jigoro Kano at the Kodokan. He was among the earliest to receive a black belt (dan ranking) in judo. And also a member of the legendary “Four Guardians of the Kodokan” (Sh*tenno) — elite fighters who proved judo’s effectiveness.

Tomita played a key role in early challenge matches between Kodokan judo and traditional jujutsu schools. He helped establish judo’s reputation as a superior and modern martial art. Alongside fighters like Shiro Saigo, he represented the Kodokan in high-level matches. Their victories helped secure judo’s dominance in Japan.

In 1904, Tomita traveled to the United States to introduce judo.
Although his demonstrations had mixed results, this marked one of the first attempts to spread judo globally.

He dedicated his life to teaching and promoting judo.
He helped preserve Kano’s philosophy of maximum efficiency (Seiryoku Zenyo) and mutual welfare (Jita Kyoei).

Most beginners stop when their first attack is blocked. They hesitate, they lose momentum, and they give their opponent the chance to counter. But the elite judoka knows that the first attack is often just a setup. The real victory happens in the “Renraku-waza”—the combination techniques. Success in Judo, as in life, is rarely about the first attempt. it’s about the relentless flow into the second and third movements that catches the opponent off guard.

Continuous motion is the hallmark of a master. It requires the ability to adapt instantly to resistance. If they block the throw to the front, you immediately sweep to the back. This fluid transition creates a pressure that is impossible to sustain. It teaches us that persistence is not just about trying the same thing over and over, but about having the flexibility to change your shape while maintaining your goal.

“In Judo, the one who stops moving is the one who is about to be thrown.” — Master’s Advice

Are you a “one-shot” attacker, or do you find more success in combinations?
