Double Gold and a Personal Best: Anesu Nyahuma Moves Closer to the World Stage

National Sports Academy 400m star Anesu Nyahuma reached another major milestone in her emerging athletics career after winning two gold medals and setting a new personal best at the SACA U18 and U20 Championships in Mauritius.
Anesu powered to victory in the Under-20 women’s 400m final in 55.79 seconds, securing gold against some of Southern Africa’s strongest junior athletes.
The performance represented a significant improvement in her career and brought her closer than ever to qualifying for the prestigious World Athletics U20 Championships.
She was chasing the qualification standard of 55.22 seconds and missed it by only 0.57 seconds.
Although the qualification target remained narrowly out of reach, the result was a major positive for Anesu and the National Sports Academy.
Her new personal best showed that she is progressing steadily towards the international standard required to compete on the global junior stage.
Coach Cuthbert Nyasango described the performance as an important achievement and a strong indication that Anesu’s development is moving in the right direction.
“I think the performance by Anesu is a great achievement, great improvement, though missing the World Championship qualifying time with just a whisker,” Nyasango said.
For a young athlete pursuing a demanding global qualification standard, closing the gap to less than a second represents a considerable milestone.
It demonstrates that Anesu is no longer simply aspiring to international qualification; she is now competing within touching distance of the required mark.
Her success in Mauritius also reflects the value of sustained international exposure.
Before travelling to Mauritius, Anesu had competed at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana, where she faced older and more experienced athletes.
Nyasango believes that experience contributed to her improved performance.
“It is a great indication that she is improving competition by competition, and the experience from Ghana helped her to do well in Mauritius,” he said.
Competing at senior level exposed Anesu to the pressure, race intensity and tactical demands of continental athletics. In Mauritius, she translated that experience into a faster time, a personal best and a regional title.
Her 400m victory was not her only success at the championships.
Anesu also formed part of the mixed 4x400m relay team that won another gold medal, completing an outstanding double-gold campaign.
The relay victory highlighted her versatility and value as a team athlete.
After the physical and mental demands of the individual 400m, she was able to contribute again in a relay environment where teamwork, pacing and reliable ex*****on were essential.
The two gold medals confirm Anesu’s growing reputation as one of the most promising athletes being developed through the National Sports Academy under Bindura University of Science Education.
Her Mauritius performance should be understood not only as a medal-winning achievement, but as a key marker in her journey from school and academy athletics towards regional, continental and world-level competition.
The gap between her new personal best and the World U20 qualifying standard now gives her a clear and measurable target.
She needs to improve by just over half a second to reach the 55.22-second mark.
That difference is small enough to provide confidence, but significant enough to require continued technical refinement, speed endurance, strength development, race ex*****on and competitive exposure.
Nyasango expressed confidence that better performances lie ahead as Anesu continues working towards her international goals.
“We are looking forward to better results, better things and better times ahead and we know we will continue to chase dreams,” he said.
The coach also credited the support provided by Bindura University of Science Education and the National Sports Academy, which has helped provide Anesu with the training environment and opportunities necessary to pursue high-performance athletics.
“We are happy that with the support that we are getting from the university (Bindura University of Science Edducation) and the National Sports Academy, we will achieve the goals that we set for ourselves,” Nyasango said.
Anesu left Mauritius with a new personal best, an individual 400m title, a mixed relay gold medal and renewed belief that qualification for the World Athletics U20 Championships is achievable.
For Anesu Nyahuma, the world stage is no longer a distant ambition. It is now a target within sight.
