Today, South Africa observes Worker’s Day. Historically, May 1st is a day of deep reflection a time to honour the immense sacrifices made by the labour movements that fought for fair wages, safe conditions, and basic human dignity in the workplace.

But as we honour the workers of the past, we must ask ourselves a difficult question: What does a day celebrating “workers” mean to a generation where millions are desperate simply for the right to work?

We recently held a bootcamp at Wits University to kickoff our programs for the year. Our facilitators focused on financial literacy for undergraduate students and study strategies & techniques (Auditing) for the PGDA class.

To kick off our programs for the year 2026 we held a psychosocial bootcamp at the University of Limpopo. This was a special event as it marks the start of 5th consecutive year of No-Valo and the University of Limpopo’s partnership. Our facilitators focused on how to manage stress and academic pressure. UL’s PGDA class of 2026 showed up in enthusiasm, attendance and engagement.

This is one of the many ways No-Valo continues to break the cycle of poverty through education.
