Florida Lake Dragon Boat Club “The Mighty Oak was once a little nut that held its ground” The club has 8 Taiwan style wooden boats and 4 slim boats in its possession.

What has now grown to be the largest club in Gauteng started off as a mere social team formed by a group of rower’s in 1999. When festivals were arranged on the rowing clubs doorstep the team would jump into a boat on race day and join in the competition and its festivities. In the first year the team faired well against the stronger teams and it became more competitive therefore the interest grew

. The club was officially constituted in April 2003 and is now home to more than just the Florida Lake Dragon Boat Teams, the lake also hosts teams from all surrounding areas, schools & community development programs. The wooden boats are the more traditional form of racing used mostly in the east with the boat itself weighing approximately a ton, whereas the slim boat weighs about 375kg and is a more westernized form of racing. The Club has at heart the development of this sport amongst all communities in Gauteng. It consists of members with educational and coaching skills that encompass the aspects of quality living. These members are experienced in coaching and have the know how to incorporate all aspects of fitness along with leadership skills, team building, motivation and other life skills.
