One of the most meaningful moments during the Work Integrated Learner Workshop at the Department of Recreation and Tourism at University of Zululand was a simple rhythmic clapping exercise that became a powerful lesson on emotional awareness.

The rhythm began with one group, followed by the second, and then the third group joining in with different patterns of clapping. Although each group carried its own rhythm, together they created a beautiful harmony.

The activity reminded us that people enter workplaces with different personalities, emotions, communication styles, energies, and life experiences. Emotional awareness is not about becoming the same; it is about learning how to work, communicate, and coexist consciously despite our differences.

In many ways, the exercise reflected the reality of the corporate world. Some people naturally lead, others observe, adapt, support, or respond differently under pressure. When individuals become emotionally aware, they learn how their presence, emotions, and energy influence collective environments.

The most beautiful part was witnessing how individual rhythms became one meaningful sound. A reminder that when people feel seen, respected, and emotionally safe, collaboration becomes more powerful and impactful.

This was more than an activity. It was a reflection of Ubuntu in motion: “I am because we are.”
