The double lapper Bronberrik parkrun takes place along the Bronberrick spruit in Hennopspark, one of the older and established suburbs in Centurion. The entire run is on trail paths. The start is on the left side of the spruit, across the spruit from the start. After a 200m fast start there is a sharp bend to the left where you are met by Dumb Bell Hill. What a sneaky and challenging climb. What goes up must come down so there is a rewarding and fast downhill to the spruit where you turn left. The path leads you along the spruit before you turn right over the spruit and run back on the other side of the spruit towards the start. The route takes you out the park where you run on a short pavement section before entering the park again and end up at the start. The notorious Dumb Bell Hill lays ahead as the lap is then repeated. The second lap is challenging when catching up to the parkrun walkers. A lot of navigating is needed. The finish is just before exiting the park. This is a well organised parkrun. There are no toilet facilities. Dogs are welcome. Not ideal for prams.

We were so excited to hear of a new Parkrun opening in Brakpan, and we weren’t disappointed. The Carnival City parkrun takes place at the Carnival City Casino. The relatively flat single lapper route is all on trail with tufts of grass. The first gradual climb is along the highway. It is hardly a climb but by the time you get to the top you welcome the gentle downhill. The finish is a gradual uphill. There are toilet facilities. Dogs are welcome. Unless you have an off road pram it is not pram friendly

The rising cost of Marathons / Ultras:

The graph below shows the average cost per kilometre to enter marathons and ultras by province including the percentage increase between 2019 and 2022.

During this time period the CPI (consumer price index) was 4.12% (2019), 3.21% (2020) and 4.61% (2021) which, if my maths is correct, equates to an overall compound inflation of 12.3% over the period. This is a lot lower than the 42.3% MRPI (marathon running price index) inflation experienced by the distance running community over the same period.

Gauteng has overtaken Kwazulu Natal and is the by far the most expensive place in the country to run at R8.11/km. The highest inflation rate (almost 80%) was experienced in the Northern Cape although the small number of 2022 marathons has an impact on the calculations.

The frugal runner will want to plan a few trips to the Eastern Cape who have the lowest cost per kilometre at R4.87. The good news is that countrywide average of R6.49 is still substantially less than a litre of petrol so running remains the most cost effective way to get around.

What an honour

The Hazeldean Farm Parkrun in the East of Pretoria celebrated its 100th run last weekend in which the organisers honoured the life of one of the first event directors who helped organise the first parkrun at the farm.
