Today marked the final day of the Safe Sport International Workshop 2026, where the Vice President of South African National Boxing Organisation participated in a discussion on the implementation of safeguarding policies, athlete confidence in safeguarding systems, and the integrity of sporting organisations.
The engagement highlighted that the effectiveness of safeguarding measures depends largely on the commitment and tone set by organisational leadership. Discussions emphasized that safeguarding officers, coordinators, and compliance committees can only function effectively where there is visible institutional support, independence, accountability, and adequate resources.
The working group further reflected on the importance of leadership creating an environment where safeguarding concerns are treated with seriousness, confidentiality, and fairness. This includes empowering safeguarding structures to act without fear or interference, ensuring proper training, adopting clear reporting mechanisms, and promoting a culture of integrity and trust within sport.
It was further acknowledged that athletes are more likely to have confidence in safeguarding policies when organisational leadership demonstrates consistency, transparency, and decisive action in addressing misconduct and protecting participant welfare.
The workshop reaffirmed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to strengthen governance, uphold ethical standards, and ensure that sport remains a safe and inclusive space for all participants.
