Today marked the final day of the Safe Sport International Workshop 2026, where the Vice President of South African National Boxing Organisation participated in a discussion on the implementation of safeguarding policies, athlete confidence in safeguarding systems, and the integrity of sporting organisations.

The engagement highlighted that the effectiveness of safeguarding measures depends largely on the commitment and tone set by organisational leadership. Discussions emphasized that safeguarding officers, coordinators, and compliance committees can only function effectively where there is visible institutional support, independence, accountability, and adequate resources.

The working group further reflected on the importance of leadership creating an environment where safeguarding concerns are treated with seriousness, confidentiality, and fairness. This includes empowering safeguarding structures to act without fear or interference, ensuring proper training, adopting clear reporting mechanisms, and promoting a culture of integrity and trust within sport.

It was further acknowledged that athletes are more likely to have confidence in safeguarding policies when organisational leadership demonstrates consistency, transparency, and decisive action in addressing misconduct and protecting participant welfare.

The workshop reaffirmed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to strengthen governance, uphold ethical standards, and ensure that sport remains a safe and inclusive space for all participants.

Adv L Kwababana the SANABO Vice President participated in an important engagement on safeguarding, culture, and universal human rights within the global sporting community.

Key discussions focused on the universality of human rights, the implementation of safeguarding policies, and the responsibility of leadership in creating ethical and accountable sporting environments.

Adv Kwababana emphasized that human rights are fundamental and protected through universal legal instruments, and that safeguarding policies can only be effective where leadership demonstrates commitment and ethical direction. The importance of consultation between policy drafters and implementers was also highlighted to ensure practical and impactful safeguarding measures.

On the relationship between culture and human rights, Adv Kwababana noted that culture and traditional practices must be respected, provided they do not undermine universal human rights standards. For every right there is a responsibility.

A key contribution made during the discussion was:

β€œIn my opinion, all fundamental human rights are non-negotiable. There is only one universal standard of acceptability for human rights, irrespective of any cultural or traditional norm or practice.”

Adv Kwababana further reflected on the role of sport in defending human dignity globally, stating:

β€œI believe that the global sporting community are the true defenders of universal human rights; the UN Security Council will not do it for us.”

The engagement concluded with a powerful reminder on collective responsibility towards child protection and creation of a safe space for the vulnerable persons within sport:

β€œIf it takes a village to raise a child, it definitely takes a village to protect a child.”
