Feedback on our recent Spring Surf Camp πββοΈππββοΈ
We kicked off on Friday afternoon arriving at JBay around 2:30pm, we settled in quickly to our accommodation and managed to get a good session in at Point to kick off the camp. The soft southerly had kicked into gear by the afternoon and Point was offering up some fun running 3 footers off the point.
We kicked out at dusk after 2.5 hours of surfing to start our braai night and begin our informal coaching. We hosted a feedback session to reflect on frustrations experienced in each individual surfer's current level as well as feedback from the first surf session.
We woke at dawn with a hot cup of coffee see the surf and make some decisions for the day. We decided to head out to Cape St Francis to score some surf in a new location and were greeted by descent 2-3 foot lefts and rights on the beachie which were well groomed and tropical blue. Seals offered up two great back to back sessions tagging in an additional 3.5 - 4 hours of surfing for the day.
We returned to home base to make some healthy food and discuss our sessions. We communicated about adjustments required, vision in surfing, improvements in technique and wave reading ability were among a few topics spoken about. We proceeded into the evening with a visual training session, coupled by an equipment debrief. We extensively covered body movement in surfing, positioning in maneuvers and visualization techniques for successful outcomes with turns and tricks. We delved deeply into surfboard shapes, tail types, rails, bottom decks & contours, rockers, surfboard fins, fin plugs and fin types and shapes.
We retired after watching some great media from the JBAY Open 2025 and some of the Abu Dhabi Longboard Surf Championships.
Sunday morning greeted us with 2-3ft surf, offering the surfers on the camp the opportunity to put into practice everything learnt up to this point. We managed to score another 3.5 hours of surfing in two sessions offering the crew a healthy training ground for the day's practice. We wrapped up in the rain and cool wind and headed home after a successful weekend and 10.5 hours of surfing in two days.
We received wonderful feedback from the participating surfers, and are looking forward to our next Surf Camp.
