What follows is a remarkable show of determination and camaraderie.
The 16th annual Bellbouy Swim was meant to take place on Saturday 14thApril, but due to some rather nebulous incompetence it was postponed at the 11th hour. Having proudly swum all sixteen of these events over 17 years (covid), and with the swim having become such an ingrained part of my swimming journey, I simply couldn’t let the moment pass unnoticed. So, within hours, the idea was born to organize our own Bellbouy “Training” Swim.
What followed was a remarkable show of determination and camaraderie. In less than 48 hours we had arranged a safety boat, gathered a group of competent swimmers, organized paddlers to accompany us, printed T-shirts, notified Harbour Control, and by Friday afternoon we were ready—whatever the weather might throw at us on Saturday morning. And throw, it did. After a safety briefing on the beach at 8:15 sharp, we set off right on schedule at 8:30.
The challenge soon made itself known. The route stretches roughly 2.45 km (as the crow flies) straight out to sea to Roman Rock (the famous Bellbouy) and it took us around 40 minutes to reach. A few bullets reaching there in under 30 minutes!! After a brief but ceremonious photoshoot at the buoy, the true test began: the long, demanding swim back to shore, which took over an hour. When we finally reached the beach, (most recording over 5k's) a wave of pride, relief, and celebration washed over us all, and this sense continued into the Something Good Roadhouse afterwards where an interesting liquid breakfast was had by all.
What started as a response to disappointment became something far more meaningful. It was a testament to initiative, resilience, and the incredible spirit of a group of swimmers who refused to let circumstance define the day. I am immensely proud of every swimmer’s tenacity, courage, and resolve. Judging by the smiles and stories shared afterwards and still continue, this might just be something worth doing again. 🌊💪
A special mention has to be made to the safety crew including the professional paddlers and to our incredible skipper who volunteered his boat to ensure our safety. Without this professional crew, the above would not have been possible. Thanks so much Nick , Mark, Vicus, Graham, Luvuyo and others
