Great having good friends around! Evert, Jonathan and Mr M — we had a fantastic safari, getting out and about, enjoying the field, the sea and, most importantly, good company.

At the end of the day, it’s not always about the trophy. It’s about having a good time, sharing the adventure, enjoying the outdoors and appreciating the blessings we have in life.

A little perspective

To all the keyboard conservationists and anti-hunters who have plenty of time to comment, cuss and condemn — perhaps take five minutes to look beyond the photograph before forming an opinion. 😉

In many parts of Africa, without the income generated by ethical, regulated hunting, the wildlife simply would not have the same value — or even the same habitat to live in.

Hunters go into remote areas where the average modern-day city slicker wouldn’t dare venture. A single safari can support up to 11 people directly, with those people in turn supporting families of their own. That is real rural employment and real economic value.

Take away that income and many properties would simply revert to cattle, sheep and goats. The wildlife that currently makes those areas special — giraffe, hundreds of impala, warthog, leopard, buffalo, zebra and everything else — would have to make way for livestock.

And yes, there are organisations doing the homework. The Origins Foundation, founded by South African scientist and conservationist Robbie Kröger, documents the relationship between hunting, wildlife, communities and conservation. If you genuinely want to understand the subject, spend some time there before reaching for the keyboard. (The Origins Foundation)

Then there is PHASA — the Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa — a recognised professional body whose members are bound by professional and ethical standards and whose stated mission includes responsible hunting and sustainable wildlife use. (PB Design SAQA)

PHASA

We are only a small cog in a very big wheel. Our own little Hunt for Hunger project, helping feed more than 40 orphaned children, is just one small way we try to give back to our community.

So perhaps the question isn’t simply “How can you shoot an animal?”

Perhaps ask yourself: “What have I personally contributed to conserving wildlife, supporting rural communities or feeding people who need it?”

Look a little further than the picture — and perhaps put the keyboard down long enough to do some homework.

Conservation is more complicated than a Facebook comment. 😉

The fisherman and the hunter must be two of the most optimistic people around. They know that patience and perseverance pay off. You may go home empty-handed today, but tomorrow could be the day you’ve been waiting for.
