About Durban Surf Lifesaving Club

Durban Surf Lifesaving Club was formed 90 years ago on Tuesday 28th June 1927 at a meeting in the Mayor’s parlour and is proud to be recognised as the first lifesaving club to be formed, not only in Durban, but in South Africa. The club is now a globally recognised powerhouse in the world of Surf Lifesaving, first touring internationally when the sports embargo w

as lifted in 1993 and going on to dominate the world by winning two World Club Championships in 1998 and 2004, captained and coached by the present SA Swimming coach Graham Hill, along with Brett Pengelly and Julian Taylor. Behind the scenes of lifesaving competition comes the real purpose of the sport – to be at your very fittest and fastest to save lives on the beach. Since its inception Durban Surf has been located at North Beach, Durban, a magnificent playground for ocean and surf enthusiasts.

A Sunday morning well spent in the water! 🏊‍♂️🏊‍♀️ From familiar faces to first-time racers, it was awesome seeing everyone rock up, race and give it their all.

What a successful second monthly competition! 🔥 We had a fantastic mix of new faces and familiar faces rocking up, getting in the water and giving it everything they had. 💪

A massive WELL DONE to all our winners and everyone who raced — the energy, competitiveness and sportsmanship made for an awesome morning! 👏🏆

Today was an absolute blast at Durban Surf Lifesaving Club! ☀️🏖️

Thank you to all the families who joined us for our Nipper Open Day and helped make it such a huge success. It was fantastic seeing the kids getting involved, trying new things, making new friends and having plenty of fun in the sun! 🙌

Nippers is about so much more than competition — it’s about building confidence, learning lifesaving and beach safety skills, staying active and creating friendships that last. 🚩🌊

To everyone who joined us today, thank you for being part of it! We hope you had an amazing morning and we’re looking forward to seeing all those smiling faces back on the beach next weekend! ❤️
