🚴‍♂️ Are you training hard enough—or smart enough to go the distance?

Endurance cycling is not just about fitness.

Over the next 5 weeks, we’re breaking down the key skills that shape performance on the bike—whether you’re training for your first triathlon, chasing a PB, or taking on an ultra-distance event.

We’ll cover:
⚡ Endurance – your engine
⚡ Pacing – ride smart, not just hard
⚡ Nutrition & Hydration – fuel the work
⚡ Aerodynamics – free speed
⚡ Mental Resilience – stay strong under pressure

Many athletes focus on training harder. The best athletes focus on building better skills.

Race-day success isn’t about who suffers most—it’s about who executes best.

Join me over the next 5 weeks as we unpack the skills that turn cyclists into endurance athletes.

Are you training harder—or building the skills that actually make you faster?

Part 4 of Open Water Swimming Drills 🏊

Catch-Up Drill: less chaos, more control. Slow it down and clean it up. 🌊😅

One arm stays out front until the other catches up before the next stroke kicks in. Easy on paper. Brutal in the water.

Why open water swimmers love it? It builds patience, rhythm, reach, and body position—so you stop thrashing and start moving smarter.

Why it matters:

🏊 Sharper timing, better coordination
🏊 Longer stroke, less wasted effort
🏊 More balance, more streamline
🏊 Better energy savings for the long haul

In open water, smooth beats messy every time. The calmer your stroke, the more energy you keep when the water gets rough.

Slow it down. Reach long. Swim smart.

Open Water Swimming Drills: Part 3

Single Arm Drill: the fastest way to expose—and fix—imbalances in your stroke. 🌊

This drill takes your stroke back to basics so you can dial in rotation, balance, catch mechanics, and alignment. One arm works, one arm rests—and there’s nowhere for weak spots to hide. 😅

Why open water swimmers should do it:

🏊 Improves stroke symmetry
🏊 Sharpens catch awareness
🏊 Builds rotation and stability
🏊 Reveals inefficiencies before race day does

Open water is honest. The Single Arm Drill helps you fix the cracks before the ocean exposes them.
Slow it down. Get technical. Swim smarter.

Your hips and shoulders aren’t just “tight.”
They’re reflecting the training load you’ve been carrying all week. 👀

Endurance athletes chase mileage, watts, pace, and splits—but mobility is often the first thing skipped and the first thing that shows up in your performance.

💪Dynamic stretching before training helps you move better, generate more power, and avoid sloppy compensation patterns.
💪Simple moves like leg swings and arm circles get your body ready to perform.
💪Static stretching after training supports recovery and builds flexibility over time. Stay consistent with stretches like pigeon pose or tricep stretches to keep your body moving well.

For endurance athletes, hip and shoulder mobility isn’t optional—it’s performance insurance.

✔️ Open hips = stronger stride and smoother pedal strokes
✔️ Mobile shoulders = cleaner, more efficient swim mechanics
✔️ Better movement = less wasted energy and lower injury risk

🛑Stop treating flexibility stretching after training like an optional extra. It belongs in the session, not afterthought status.

Train your hips and shoulders like the powerhouses they are, and you’ll unlock more speed, efficiency, and resilience across every discipline.

So what’s really holding your performance back—fitness or mobility?

6-3-6 Drill: Swim Smarter, Not Harder 🌊

Most swimmers try to get faster by pushing harder.
Smart open water swimmers get faster by moving better.

The 6-3-6 drill builds what matters most:
✔️ Balance
✔️ Rotation
✔️ Timing
✔️ Breathing control
✔️ Efficiency under fatigue

How it works:
👉6 kicks while turned onto one side
👉3 full strokes
👉6 kicks while turned onto the other side

It looks simple—until fatigue exposes every weakness. 😅

This drill reveals it all:
— dropped hips
— rushed breathing
— lazy rotation
— weak core control

But when it clicks, your whole stroke changes.
You stop fighting the water and start moving through it.

In open water, efficiency beats brute force—every time.

Next training session, don’t just chase distance and speed.
Chase better movement. The results will show on race day. 🏊‍♂️🔥

4km of Chaos 🌊🔥

Last Saturday, the Fahal Island swim threw everything at my wife and me — brutal current, heavy swell, relentless chop, and 42°C heat that felt like swimming inside a hairdryer.

A clean line was almost impossible. That’s endurance sport for you: adapt fast, dig deep, and keep moving.

Considering I haven’t been able to train more than around 2 sessions per week; I still managed to finish 5th overall in 1:24 with minimal chafing or sunburn. 🏆 (I subsequently suffered some sunburn & dehydration afterwards from packing up kayaks & enjoying the atmosphere - a soft skill to get back on track with 😎.)

Perfect conditions are a bonus. The work is grit, patience, and refusing to give an inch when the ocean fights back. 👊🔥

Conditions don’t care how strong you are.
They ask one thing: How long can you stay mentally tough?

Want to build that mental edge? Join me tonight for my Sub90 Masterclass: The Key to Achieving Results.

📅 Date: Tuesday, 12 May
🕣 Time: 8.30pm (GMT +4) or 6.30pm South African time

Stop outsourcing your resilience 🚴🔧

Knowing how to fix your own bike isn’t “nice to have” – it’s power.
A flat tyre. A slipped chain. A race on the line.
No panic. No excuses. Just action.

Because out there, YOU are the backup plan.🫵

Every rider loves the glory…fewer respect the basics.
But it’s the basics that save your race when things go sideways.

Pre-ride checks aren’t admin.
They’re discipline. They’re self-respect.
They’re you saying, “I’ve got this!”

Confidence doesn’t come from luck.
It comes from knowing - when something breaks - you won’t.

Be the athlete who can handle the ride…and the unexpected.🙌
