đ§ 12 shocking things horse riders need to know about an unmanaged concussion!
1. A âminor knockâ can be a traumatic brain injury. A concussion is a brain injuryânot just a bump. Even if a rider âfeels fine,â the brain has undergone chemical and structural stress that needs recovery time.
2. Riders often donât lose consciousness. Up to 90% of concussions occur without being knocked out, which is why many riders underestimate the severity and get back on too soon.
3. Second Impact Syndrome can be fatal. If a rider takes another fall before fully recovering, they risk Second Impact Syndromeâa rapid and often fatal brain swelling that can occur within minutes.
4. Horse riding has a higher head injury risk than many extreme sports. Studies have shown equestrian activities can result in more hospital admissions for head injuries than sports like rugby or cyclingâyet concussion protocols are often far less enforced.
5. Brain function can be impaired for weeks (or longer). Unmanaged concussion can lead to Post-Concussion Syndrome, where symptoms like headaches, memory loss, irritability, and poor concentration last for monthsâor even years.
6. Reaction time is dangerously reduced
A concussed rider may have slower reflexes and poor decision-makingâputting them at higher risk of another fall, especially around horses that can be unpredictable at times (yes, even when your horse is behaving⌠accidents happen)
7. Personality and emotional changes are common
Unmanaged concussions can cause:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Aggression
- Emotional instability
These are often misdiagnosed as stress or burnout rather than brain injury.
8. Repeated concussions can cause permanent brain damage. Chronic exposure to head trauma is linked to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)âa progressive disease associated with memory loss, mood disorders, and dementia.
9. Symptoms can be delayed by hours or days
A rider might walk away feeling fineâonly to develop:
- Severe headaches
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Vision problems
later on, which delays treatment and increases risk.
10. Many riders never seek medical evaluation
Due to culture (âjust get back onâ), cost, or lack of awareness, concussions often go undiagnosed and unmanaged, compounding long-term harm.
11. Helmets reduce riskâbut donât eliminate concussion. Even with top helmets, the brain still moves inside the skull. Protective gear reduces severityâbut cannot prevent concussion entirely.
12. One concussion increases the risk of another. After a first concussion, riders are significantly more likely to suffer subsequent concussions, often with worse outcomes and longer recovery times.
