~Dear Coaches
: Coaching Principles vs. Coaching Situations
A friend of mine, Coach Nicholas, asked me: What are your thoughts on coaching principles over situations?
I responded, principles and situations are two sides of one coin. Principles are relative to situations.
Focusing on coaching principles gives players a general decision-making framework, while coaching situations trains specific, repeatable scenarios.
Combining both creates adaptable, intelligent players who can execute under pressure.
Here are the benefits of each approach and how to derive maximum value from both concepts:
COACHING PRINCIPLES:
•Adaptability: Principles (e.g., "create width in possession" or "delay the attacker") apply anywhere on the pitch, regardless of the opponent's formation.
•Player Autonomy: Empowers players to read the game and make their own real-time decisions rather than relying on script-like instructions.
•Long-Term Development: Builds deep tactical literacy that transfers across different positions, teams, and age groups.
COACHING SITUATIONS:
•Clarity Under Pressure: Specific scenarios (e.g., "3v2 counter-attack in the final third" or "defending a back-post cross") give players clear, immediate solutions.
•Pattern Recognition: High repetition of concrete situations builds muscle memory and speeds up ex*****on.
•Contextual Realism: Directly mirrors match conditions, making training session outcomes immediately visible on game day.
THE HYBRID APPROACH:
The most effective methodology uses situations as the environment to teach principles as the solution.
For example, setting up a specific 4v3 build-up situation (the scenario) to coach the underlying principle of playing through the line of pressure.
