A Mini Baja vehicle is a 4 wheeled, single-seater, off-road vehicle with full tightly specified, roll cage, powered by a single cylinder stock 10hp Briggs & Stratton engine. The Mini Baja competition is a design competition that allows students to realise their design efforts in a working vehicle and to measure the actual performance of the vehicle. Performance and adherence to the rules can be co

mpared to the efforts of students from other universities nationally and around the world. The competition was started in the United States and has spread to different parts of the world including Australia, South Africa and Brazil. It is fully sanctioned by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) . The cars are powered by a 10 horsepower Briggs and Stratton petrol engine which is governed to 3800 rpm. This is enough for a top speed of around 54km/h on the flat. The vehicle should be able to tow a heavy sled across gravel, manoevre around a tight course without touching the cone markers, lock all four wheels under braking, negotiate obstacles such as tree trunks, sandpits and 500mm deep mudpools and withstand the punishment of a four hour endurance race.
