Fight Back!
South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world. The difference between our crime and that of other countries is that our crime tends to be more violent. Thieves no longer merely steal your car when you leave it, they hijack the vehicle. Hijackings, by their nature, are potentially fatal. There is already almost no-one in South Africa who has been untouched, or unaffected by crime. Everyone you speak to these days have either been burgled, hijacked, r***d, assaulted or otherwise violated themselves, or someone close to them. Currently, SA has one of the highest rates of r**e in the world - 109 every day, as well as 53 murders and 58 attempted murders every day. Each year, according to studies by UNISA based on police information, one million women and children are r***d in South Africa. This means that at present one in two SA women will be r***d at least once in her lifetime if this trend continues. To stop r**e, we have to change fundamental attitudes that have prevailed for hundreds of years. This is going to take a very long time. In the meantime one thing we can do is try to prevent r**e (and other crimes) from happening to us as individual women. All indications are that a woman who can defend herself and make informed choices in difficult situations is better placed to avoid r**e than one who is not.
We believe that every woman in South Africa should attend a self defence course. Ideally, our daughters should be taught at school, but sadly, this does not happen. This means that it is up to us to educate ourselves. This course will not guarantee anything. But it will provide you with the knowledge and ability to enormously reduce your risk of becoming one of the one-in-two South African women who will be r***d in her lifetime.
