On Saturday, 18th September 2021, the newly formed Distance Riders Garden Route (DRGR) Club hosted their first official Distance Riding Association of South Africa (DRASA) training meet.

DRASA facilitates Competitive Trail Riding events through affiliated clubs throughout South Africa - where the focus is on paced distance riding and horsemanship. Their goal is to promote a long-lasting relationship between horses and their riders with the interests of the horses receiving far more weight than in traditional equine sports.

The DRGR were grateful to Cairnbrogie Farm who volunteered to host their inaugural Clinic which went off without a hitch. While only a few entries were expected, the property hardly noticed the over 40 entrants, including the 29 Riders who participated on the day with Andrew Hill and his Cairnbrogie Livery Team erecting temporary paddocks and adjusting their existing cycling routes to handle the half-ton equestrians exploring their forest and sea-front farmlands.

THANK YOU
-to Participants for making day a tremendous success.
-to Cindy and her DRASA Team of Judges who travelled down from Gauteng & Port Elizabeth for the weekend to come and teach us all about this exciting discipline.
-to Andrew Hill and his Team at Cairnbrogie for beautiful venue and going above and beyond to prepare it, for the day.
-to Red Cross who were available for any medical emergencies.
-to Equi-Feeds for sponsoring the prizes.

Here is some info on what Distances Riding is about. The tests are ALL based on real life skills a horse and rider will need on a trail -just tested at base. For example -the box with the turn on fq or hq is the learning of a skill that may be needed in a narrow ledge or path through thick bush/rocks where there is no space to turn around comfortably. The labyrinth is weaving and turning around trees or rocks etc on a path, the pole bending much the same, the backing is not only something a rider and horse must be able to do quietly and obediently to get out of dangerous situations but is also a test of balance and control and horse trust in their rider. The usual figure of 8 is a test of accuracy, aids and riders understanding and use of diagonals which are crucial on longer distances. All the tests are simple but something horse and rider can practice and should, to improve their bond, riding skills and balance. None of these are EETO obstacles as none of them are extreme or something dangerous at all. We have been very careful to mimic any type of skill needed on a trail and none at all where riders and horses can be dangerously overfaced and get into unsafe conditions. If the rider cannot do a turn on hq etc then they just do a full turn in the box. I think this one is probably the one most needed to be learnt by all riders as not only does it add balance, suppleness, straightness, strength and skill for horses and rider , it is also one of the most useful skills for control of your horse- know how to control the feet and you can control the horse in dangerous situations.
The REASON why we use these hms tests is because hms is one of the 3 principles that defines CTR (Competitive Trail Riding) and makes us uniquely different from other disciplines. Time/speed is about knowing your horses capabilities over different terrains and in the conditions of the day based on your training and their fitness. Vet scores is about understanding and training your horses. Genetic abilities and metabolic parameters and horsemanship is about training both of you to comfortably and safely tackle trails and all conditions you may encounter on them. A very unique set of requirements 😁
