"Locking in" is the ability to block distraction and execute. It's a skill. And you can practice it without changing a single thing the coach does.

Practical ways to lock in (outside of practice):

Before practice:

ยท Same playlist on the way to the pool. Same routine getting out of the car. Predictability tells your brain: we're switching modes now.

After the race (for parents to ask):

ยท "What did you think about during the race?" If the answer is "nothing", that's locked in.

At home:

ยท Visualize for 60 seconds the night before practice. See yourself at the wall. Hearing the set. Breathing before the push-off. That's rehearsal. It works.

Locking in is not a mood. It's a choice you make before you even touch the water.
