Vision vs. the Scoreboard

Most business owners describe their vision as a number. Double revenue. Open five branches. Reach a hundred million.

Those aren't visions... they're outcomes. What you get once a real vision has been pursued.

I once worked with two owners, similar industries, similar revenue. The first told me his goal was fifty million in turnover within four years. When I asked why that number mattered to him, personally, he couldn't really answer.

The second owner ran a much smaller business. His vision was that a school leaver with no connections could join as a junior and become a partner within a decade. No revenue figure at all. And yet his staff could repeat it back, word for word, months later.

The revenue followed. It always does, once people connect to what they're actually building.

Try this test on your own vision: describe it without using a single number. What's left?

Every business has a culture. There's no such thing as no culture... only ones you've shaped on purpose, and ones that formed on their own while nobody was looking.

Culture isn't the values printed on your office wall. It's what gets rewarded, what gets tolerated, and what actually happens when nobody senior is in the room. How does your team show up?

The question was never "do we have one." It's whether the one you've got is actually helping your business become what you want it to become.

Here's a test: what would a brand-new employee sense in their first week, before anyone explains anything to them? Would they feel a culture that matches what you say you stand for... or a different one entirely?

If there's a gap, that's not somebody else's job to fix. It's the next piece of leadership work.
