It is with profound sadness that Ottoman Cricket Club mourns the passing of one of our most beloved senior members and Honorary Presidents, Yusuf Fredericks, affectionately known to generations simply as “Boeta U.”
Boeta U celebrated his 86th birthday on the 1st of May and remained one of the club’s most treasured stalwarts, second only to Ammie U Joseph in seniority within Ottoman Cricket Club.
Having joined Ottoman from Young Ideas Cricket Club in 1969, he became a respected fixture in our First Team for many years as a skilful leg-spinner and dependable lower-order batsman. His cricketing achievements extended beyond club level, earning him the honour of representing Western Province and captaining the Western Province B side — accomplishments that reflected both his talent and leadership qualities.
More importantly, Boeta U represented the values that define Ottoman Cricket Club — loyalty, humility, brotherhood and unwavering commitment. His association with the club spanned decades and generations, and he remained deeply connected to Ottoman throughout his life. He proudly attended more than ten of the club’s special five-year anniversary Gatam celebrations, occasions made richer by his presence and support.
The Fredericks family’s contribution to Ottoman also continued through his son, Noor, who himself gave many years of dedicated service to the club.
Today, Ottoman Cricket Club has lost more than a former player and office bearer — we have lost part of our history and one of the true custodians of our legacy.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mrs Fredericks, Noor, the extended Fredericks family and all who were privileged to know and love Boeta U.
May the Almighty grant him the highest stages of Jannah, fill his grave with mercy and light, and grant strength and sabr to his loved ones during this difficult time.
