I joined Roark in January 2017 as I was looking for a functional fitness gym with a positive, welcoming vibe, and Roark worked well for me on those accounts.

The workouts are very rarely the same with months going by before a workout is even repeated which keeps things interesting and challenging.
_
The team style workout routines ensure I don't get complacent in my efforts and continue to push myself. And the watchful eye and technique coaching from our coaches makes sure each rep is done properly.

It’s Happening! Our very first mixed session in what feels like forever is coming to you this Saturday morning at 8:00am! If you’ve ever been to one of these, you will know that the vibe and energy in the gym is palpable and that no matter what, we all sweat through the session together as a team! Not only testing your balance to the max – which will improve core strength – the elevated split squat is a powerhouse of a leg workout, with your quads, calves and hamstrings all set to benefit. The glutes are also heavily involved in the exercise, so it works for anyone keen on perfecting their posterior.

Here’s the best thing about it, though – almost every sport in the world (running very much included) requires that you drive off one leg at a time, so if you haven’t got some unilateral (one-legged) work in your training plan, then you’re missing a trick. The Bulgarian split squat is the answer: not only is it slightly easier to learn and master than the full-on back squat, but it’s also more universally-doable for people with oddly-shaped femurs and arguably more injury proof.

I didn’t always enjoy exercising, in fact my relationship with weight loss and exercise for most of my life has been a tug-of-war until I had my AH HA! moment.
-
In 2015 I started yet another weight loss journey but this time around I signed up for functional training instead of the normal gym contract and this was the beginning of my love story with exercise 😍. The feelings of dread, loathing and hate for exercise were gone; replaced with excitement and enthusiasm to train and to feel strong.
_
I’ve come to realize that eating healthy and exercise is not something you do as a once-off fix; it needs to form part of your daily routine for the rest of your life. It will have its ups and downs, of course, over the years (cause nothing ever stays the same, EVER!) but consistency is key, KEEP SHOWING UP.
_
I joined Roark in 2018 and within the first couple of weeks of joining I was encouraged to sign up for the Roark Games. I was reluctant cause I was not in the best shape at the time but I was promised it wouldn’t be difficult. They lied! 😂The Roark Games were tough but more than that I had fun participating and instantly loved what the Roark community represented. The support, the encouragement, the banter, the laughter, the gym buddy connections and the gyms mascot (and my best friend) Jackson 🐕.
_
Being at Roark has been a blessing especially through this crazy year. I have been able to keep training through lockdown even when I lost my job and couldn’t afford my membership for a couple of months. It’s a safe space where I can always be myself through the good and bad days and with no judgement, people accept you as you are and support you through it all.
