On Route to the race, you will most likely have to stop & wait for one of these guys to cross the road 🐢

Four tortoise species occur within the area.
Of these, the most likely to be seen are the marsh terrapin and the large leopard tortoise. The tent tortoise, a Cape endemic, is occasionally seen in the drier western and north-western areas while the angulate tortoise is a common resident of the southern part of the Baviaans.

The Dutch word for baboon, "baviaan", gave the area its name.

These animals used to be far more prosperous in the area but today are protected.
Mature male baboons can weigh up to 40 kg, more than double the mass of the females which average only 17 kg, and live for about 45 years.
These animals are very vocal and you'll be made aware of them as you run past, by the sound of their loud bark.

Sandstone is the red/orange stone that typically forms in layers, which is the main rock type in Baviaanskloof. It consists of deposited sediments that were transported there by ancient rivers or streams millions of years ago.
