Kevin Koza Coaching I help tech pros get jacked & out of their heads so they can build confidence

Less is more in lifting.

When you’re a beginner, you can definitely spam volume and see gains. But as you adapt, you’ll see better results when you are intentional about not -doing work- and instead -stimulate growth-. Growth comes from overloading your prior capacity— and if you’re excessively fatigued or under-recovered, you won’t be able to overload, and thus you might miss the right level of stimulus.

It’s not all-or-nothing— you won’t kill your gains easily. Overtraining is really hard to hit. But I’ve seen most clients get better results when they drop the volume and recognize that the goal of the gym is to send a signal, and they recover with low-stress activities and sleep for next time.

Don’t let bad technique kill your gains, but don’t let fear of bad technique silently steal them.

You build up the gym as requiring some big push, but it actually needs small boosts of momentum. You’ve conquered “learning a lift” and how to get in the space, so doing that again doesn’t -feel- like an accomplishment.

But if you go back and play level 1, you’ll still get XP for it, I promise

I have no issue hitting a workout with just 1 set. It contributes to my identity that “I like lifting” and that “I’m consistent.” Eventually, the identity propels the actions, and that’s where you get the gains.

Building confidence comes down to addressing your mismatch on “what I know” vs “what’s gonna happen?”

The more you can make certain aspects of the gym concrete— “I know this lift,” “I’ve seen these people before,” “I know what weight I’m comfortable with,” lifting becomes something you’re confident in.

Don’t just go and pray that no one is watching. Build skills at home to the point that even if they were, you’d be OK with it.

Lifting should be a state of flow.

I joke about “getting to gorilla nirvana” where I’m simply moving weight around with no thoughts. It becomes automatic when you focus on a few things— and I want to show you how to get there.

But it’s hard to get to this point when lifting “feels like a chore.” Learning to connect with your body while lifting will bring all of the positive mental and physical effects.

Comment the word STUDY and I’ll send over the playbook that we used for Jake in my coaching to go from hating lifting to loving the gym!

Painting has taught me so many transferable skills to lifting— let me teach you how art relates to getting jacked!

You’re putting too much pressure on lifting for muscle growth.

The way to actually get jacked is to focus on the sensory side of lifting, not the schematic side.

Don’t chase rep counts and optimizations and comparisons on “what’s best” all day. Instead, go into the gym and give yourself some space to explore, building the habit of pushing yourself over time. If you’re in your head the whole time, you’re missing half of the gains.

Follow for more where I break down how I coach overthinkers through building muscle.
