Ronnie Moore Memorial / Remembrance Championship
Team Crowe’s day started with an 8:30am breakfast, then Hudson, Leo, and Matt took a short trip to CRL Auto Services to help the Lang family transport six speedway bikes to the track.
Arriving at the track, Wayne McLintock was unloading four stunning bikes from different solo speedway eras — a warm welcome it was! The old red 125 made its way up the track from the pits, joining around 20 other vintage bikes glistening in the overcast conditions (a bitter wind kept most people in jackets).
Bikes were checked for their Speedway New Zealand tick of approval. A look at the track showed it was perfect. As the pits filled up, midday arrived.
Matt geared up for a ride on a 500cc speedway bike. Glen Sole had kindly offered Matt a GM upright classic solo bike for the meeting. It had been 18 years since he last rode one — just like riding a bike, some would say 😅
With nerves aside, Matt headed out onto the track with Wayne McLintock for his first ride. He completed some laps and even got the back wheel spinning — that feeling of sliding a speedway bike again was unreal.
After a trip back to the pits for some wise words from some local heros, Matt was keen for Moore. The second training run showed improved control and confidence. By 1pm, training was over and race meeting preparation began.
T-shirts were flying out of the van for prepaid members, and the sign board was quickly filling with signatures. After a good riders’ briefing, bikes started warming up!
The grand parade saw Matt race up to the display to grab the red 125 for a slow lap with the boys, followed by a moment of silence for loved ones no longer with us.
Hudson and Leo ran their first heats, both finishing with seconds in their respective classes on a smooth, flat track — possibly catching them by surprise 😉
Matt was next in the Classics class, starting off the back due to mentor program rules. He had a great ride with Wayne McLintock, learning lines and finding the best parts of the track. A look up the inside for a lap saw him finish 2nd behind Andy Aldridge, who had left us in his dust earlier.
Hudson’s next heat saw him gate well and lead to the chequered flag, riding smooth and fast.
In Leo’s heat, he was strong out of the tapes — three wide into turn one — found a clean line and took the win by a couple of bike lengths ahead of Leo Cogle, both on identical 70cc RL Racing bikes. These two are showing and learning great racing skills, and the equal machinery makes for exciting racing.
Matt’s next ride was another solid run, bringing it home 2nd again — just!
Third round of heats:
Hudson brought the 51c machine home in 2nd, chasing Rory Aldridge in a close race.
Leo secured another 1st, banking more points
Finals:
Hudson went into the A Final 3rd on points, choosing gate 2. Maddox Harley was on gate 1, Rory Aldridge on gate 3, and B Final winner Arlen Voice took gate 4.
All riders out of the gate fast with Maddox coming out of first corner ahead of Hudson hot on his skidshoe Rory right with them, made for an exciting race, Hudson threw everything at Madox tried around the outside couldnt make it work, went looking down low to have the door shut by Madox many times. Brought the 125 home in 2nd well done
Leo was looking forward to his final. With four junior lights Abel Messervy and Phoenix Messervy filling the other spots over four heats, the overall points decided the winner. In the last race, Leo chased down the 371 of Leo Cogle by didnt quite get there at the checkered to finish 2nd.
Both Leos were tied on points, with the result decided on countback to the first race — where Leo had finished 2nd.
Matt’s final saw him again battling Wayne McLintock. Despite pushing hard, Wayne held him off with a fast ride.
Matt finished 2nd overall — another strong result for Team Crowe.
A huge thanks to Laura and Jade for keeping everyone fed and handling all junior class scoring — outstanding effort. Couldn’t do it without you ❤️
