Episode 8: Small Men Explained
https://youtu.be/Bm-h8mDQA_8
In this episode, I explain the concept of small men (chiisai men) and how efficiency, timing, and proper body mechanics create a powerful and effective strike.
Many practitioners believe that a stronger men strike requires a larger swing. However, when executed correctly, a small and efficient motion can generate greater speed, better timing, and stronger control of the center. In this video, I demonstrate how minimizing unnecessary movement allows you to strike more directly while maintaining proper structure and balance.
These principles help create a compact, precise men strike that maintains proper structure while maximizing speed, reach, and power.
This video is intended for practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of striking mechanics, refine their fundamentals, and improve the efficiency of their techniques.
In this episode:
• Understanding the concept of small men (chiisai men)
• Efficiency and minimizing unnecessary motion
• The importance of unified body movement
• Left foot, left hip, left hand, and shinai moving as one energy
• Moving from kamae to the final position using the shortest path
• Using the left foot to generate additional power before fumikomi
• Practical demonstration of small men mechanics

It traces my Kendo journey—from my childhood in Brazil, through Canada and Japan, and to the United States—where I have had the privilege of practicing and learning with so many wonderful kenshis. Kendo has given me lifelong friendships, mentors, students, and unforgettable experiences across the world.
Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. My journey has just started—I will continue to strive, learn, and share the beauty of Kendo.
