The group makes the workout.
A 5:45 start is easier when you know others will be at the clubhouse, the harbour's waiting, and there's a coffee with your name on it after.

Fitness is the reason most people come. The group is the reason they stay.

Everyone talks about leg drive as loading the footplate.
Almost no one talks about the other half — the opposite hip pulling forward at the same moment. That push-pull is where your rotation actually comes from. Here's what's happening every time your legs work the boat 👉
Stroke Lab is our technique series for paddlers who want to understand what's going on under the stroke, not just repeat it.

Winter's here — and we're not slowing down, we're lighting up. 🔥

Two reasons to get on the water this week and upcoming long weekend:

🌃 Vivid Paddle — rescheduled to Thursday 4 June. The harbour turns into a light show and we paddle right through the middle of it. Bridge glowing, water full of colour, the city lit up from the best seat in the house.

☀️ King's Birthday Social Paddle — Monday 8 June. A public-holiday morning on the water with the crew, because there's no better way to spend a day off!

Cold mornings, big smiles, the best paddling of the year.
This is what winter looks like at SHSC.
See you out there. 🚣

🐋 The humpback highway is open.

From mid-May, tens of thousands of whales begin the long haul north past Sydney — one of the longest migrations of any animal on earth — and by late June they're rolling through in their hundreds, day after day, just off the heads. Some even slip inside the harbour itself.

Here's the part you can't buy a ticket to: being out there anyway. While the tour boats head out to go looking, our paddlers are already on the water for the morning — and every so often, away on the horizon, a back breaks the surface, a fin slaps, a spout catches the light. No engine. No commentary. Just the sound of the blow carrying across the water, and the whole thing unfolding on its own time with you quietly in the middle of it.

That's winter on the water. The harbour empties, the ocean gets interesting, and the paddlers who show up share it with one of the great migrations on the planet — earned, not booked.

Whale season's here. Come and see the version of the harbour most people never do.

Forty minutes in, the catch becomes weak.

The ski feels heavier. Your pace drops. Most paddlers blame endurance — but the real culprit is usually power, the explosive force in the catch, the part of the stroke that fades first when you train only the long, steady stuff.

Three small changes that keep the catch sharp 👉

The thing nobody tells you about winter paddling is that your feet get cold first.
Not your face, not your hands — your feet.

They sit in the footwell with a bit of water washing around them and slowly become the only thing you can think about. By the second 30 minutes of the session, the rest of the body has warmed up. The feet haven't.

A pair of 2mm neoprene socks solves it. They're the cheapest, smallest piece of winter kit you can own — and most paddlers wish they'd bought them a season earlier.

The second piece is pants. Wet calves and wind on the legs sound minor until you're an hour in. Neoprene paddle pants solve that problem — the Hydroflex range for milder mornings, the VCold Flex range once it really drops.

Both come from Vaikobi (SHSC sponsor).
They're the kit our coaches and members wear through winter, and the reason we keep paddling when most people stop.

Most paddlers, when they get tired, start pulling with their arms.
It feels productive. It isn't.

The arms are small muscles, they fatigue fast, and they can only produce so much force. The real engine is the hips. The legs load the footplate, the hips drive the rotation, and the arms connect the body to the paddle — they're not the engine, just the link to it.

Stroke Lab — what torso rotation is doing, and how to feel it.
