5” x 5” x 3” Idol

I was really excited to see the Idol come out for Roto Grip. Since the discontinuation of the Haywire, RG fans haven’t had that strong symmetrical option with a big cover on it to handle solid volumes of oil. For what I saw the Dare Devil Trick was good, but not nearly as effective in that role. Then, the only option was the Phaze 2.

Because the numbers are so similar but the covers are vastly different, I layed out my Idol exactly like my Phaze 2 so I could give people an accurate assessment on their similarities and differences.

They are similar in that they spin up fast and easily. For those with fast speed or need it to grip in heavy oil, these are the two strongest symmetricals on the market. Where they are different, the Idol is NOTICABLY sooner on the lane bringing the breakpoint closer to the bowler and when it sees the spot on the lane it moves.

In our local challenge league we’re on a 48’ Jr Gold pattern and this ball is usable right out of the gate until the medium volume pattern gets a small hole in it. Then I have to throw it to a hook spot where the pattern really develops into a fallback. Because the cover is a slower response, the Phaze 2 actually is better for playing the “lay” at least on that pattern.

So the summary is built off that last sentence. If you want to see a similar motion and were thinking of either the Phaze 2 or the Idol, the Idol is a faster response and a good 5 feet sooner than the Phaze 2.

5” x 3.5” x 4.5” Hyper CELL Fused

Over the years I’ve had many, many CELL balls with this layout and it’s by far my favorite. When the new Fused came out, there wasn’t a question what layout I would pick for it.

But, while I knew what I wanted to do, the hardest decision to make though is I currently have a No Rules Pearl in the same layout and I LOVE it. So I’m in a bit of a quandary…..I don’t want to have the Fused overlap the NRP, but I also wanted to take advantage of a new cover available on the Fused.

What happened is I was so impressed with the Fised, I took the NRP out of my bag and gave it to my son to use – that is now his favorite ball.

With a big pin-out on the Fused, it allowed me to do this layout with an extra hole 6” from the pin and 1” from the PSA making the core add differential in making it hook more, sooner and smoother. If you attended the Intense seminar Storm ran last year you’ll know why this position is so important to enhancing ball reaction.

I’m really impressed how assertive this cover is off the friction; the response is fast and strong. We have been finding in the shop that speed dominant players can throw this ball hard and still see it change direction. If anyone knows Nick Bruckner and how hard he throws, just watch this ball off the spot and you will know what I mean.

And for what it’s worth, in my opinion a pin up layout looks better than pin down going through the pins. So even though I say that, a 4.5” buffer makes this pin down for me.

This classic core combined with this cover makes me think you could legitimately have two of these; one pin up and one pin down and have a solid 1-2 punch when you need different shapes on the lane. Something like a 5” x 3.5” x 2” and a 5” x 3.5” x 4.5” I believe would complement each other well with the spot the ball starts to lose energy and the shape through the zone being the same but with the 2.5” difference in buffer making the responses different down lane.

You will not be disappointed in this ball as it’s the hottest selling thing in our shop. I haven’t had anyone ask for a No Rules Pearl since this came out. If you’ like to test this one, be sure to contact me to schedule an appointment to roll out MatchMaker bowling balls.

5” x 4.5” x 1.5” Intense

This intense was done intentionally with this layout in a 1.5” buffer that seems way too small, but it has a specific purpose.

Hank Boomershine helped me lay out an original Fight for the USBC OC where the smaller buffer shuts down the transition window so you can make smaller moves when the lane changes and not give away the pocket too much. I still have that Fight today and it hardly gets any use, but when it does, it’s an amazing reaction.

Enter the Intense and I wanted to get this layout into an asymmetrical ball. With the additional differential and intermediate, I knew this layout would give me a similar motion, but start sooner than the Fight that at times can be tricky.

Like the Danger, I haven’t had many opportunities to throw the Intense as I’d like, but I had a chance to throw it on a quick transitioning league pattern and liked the results. The key is I saw the change in the lane quicker but when the ball saw the spot it rolled more forward rather than jerk off the dry spot. Then simple moves brought back the desired motion until it changed again.

The short buffer IS NOT for everyone. But having an option like this in your bag for a specific purpose of closing down the transition window when it’s needed is a real benefit in controlling the motion of the ball to make it go through the pins better.

5” x 4.5” x 2.75” Dare Devil Danger

The “Danger” is put in my bag in the same spot my original Dare Devil was in with a slightly stronger PSA so I could get an extra hole in it.

I liked my Dare Devil a lot, but with the challenge patterns I bowl on in league, there were few times I could use it. Some times with the clean cover and lower medium differential, I think I didn’t bowl enough long format things where I could go to it.

So with the Danger coming out as a shiny Hybrid, I thought I could get more use out of this one with the change in cover. And as much as I like my original, I couldn’t believe how much better the Danger is. I broke the cover just a bit to make it read a bit sooner, but the strong/smooth move of the ball is accentuated by this change.

So far I’ve used this ball every night I’ve bowled league. I’m very impressed with how it goes through the pins – it almost seems there is a loud crack that is more like a “ping” as it hits. I hope this ball keeps me impressed as it has so far as I really like this core and think it fits my style well.
