🚨 EVER WONDERED WHY AN OUTRIGGER CANOE NEEDS 6 PADDLERS?

🚣‍♂️🌊An OC6 isn't just a boat—it's a synchronized machine where every single seat has a critical mission.

If you've ever watched the Bundaberg Outrigger Canoe Club out on the water and wondered who does what, here is the official breakdown of The 6 Seat Roles Explained:

⏱️ Seats 1 & 2: The Rhythm and The Melody. Positioned right at the front, these two are the heartbeat of the canoe! They break the clean water for the rest of the crew, doing the hard yards up front. They must maintain a steady rhythm, but be ready to instantly adapt and change the stroke rate depending on the ocean conditions.

📢 Seat 3: The CallerThe voice of the canoe! Seat 3 calls the changes (like the iconic "Hut, ho!") to switch paddling sides efficiently every 15–20 strokes. They also read the water to know exactly when to call the push so the team can catch a wave.

💪 Seat 4: The Ama GuardianPart of the heavy physical engine room, but with a massive technical responsibility. Seat 4 keeps a sharp eye on the ama (outrigger float) in rough water to stop the canoe from flipping (huli). Because of this, Seat 4 must be prepared to lean on the ama and paddle on one side for a long time to keep the boat stable!

⚙️ Seat 5: The Co-PilotThe ultimate support system. Seat 5 drives the engine from the back while working directly with the steerer. Whether it's managing tight turns, tracking stability, or executing quick maneuvers, Seat 5 jumps in to provide whatever steering support the captain needs.

👑 Seat 6: The Steersman (Head on a Stick!)The ultimate authority on the ocean. As captain, Seat 6 is the only paddler who can constantly look around—almost like their head is on a stick! They scan the conditions, navigate swells, make the ultimate safety calls, and ensure the crew is traveling the best, most efficient route possible.

🙌 ONE BOAT, ONE CREW No matter where you sit, you are primed to ensure your team gets the best ride possible. When all six seats click together, there is no better feeling on the water!

🌊✨👇 Thinking of Paddlinge - Coming soon we will be having some come andtry sessions!

Comment below with your go-to seat number! Are you the melody up front, an ama guardian, or a captain?

Milestones on Saturday Endurance 🛶

A steady effort from the crew this morning. Saturday sessions focus on building the physical and mental stamina needed for racing, and today everyone put in the work.

Our paddlers locked in and completed a solid 22km endurance session.
Why we focus on endurance training:

* Aerobic base: We help you build the long-term stamina needed to maintain speed over long distances.
* Mental toughness: These sessions help us learn to push through fatigue when the muscles start to burn.
* Crew blending: Spending extended time on the water helps the crew sync their timing perfectly.
* Technique under fatigue: Long sessions force us to rely on clean body mechanics instead of just raw muscle.

Stepping up the training:

* August: Saturday sessions will hover around the 20km mark to build our base.
* September: We will be bumping the distance up to about 30km to peak for racing.

This training is important preparation for our upcoming regattas. We are finalizing the schedule, so stay tuned for the details soon.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

The 6 Steps

Step 1: Walk through the gates (the hardest part!)
Step 2: Prep the canoes (because safety is sexy, and a prepped boat is the best boat)
Step 3: Listen for your seat position and the day's drill
Step 4: Launch the canoe
Step 5: Paddle and let the day melt away on the ocean
Step 6: Put the canoes back in their resting place

Head home a little salty and with a big smile because that was good!

Come and join us! 🌊🛶
