On a lovely spring day the USV youth looked to expand their lead at the top of Ospreys league 1 with a tough away trip to Waunarlywdd RFC youth.
With a good squad hopes were high to extend the unbeaten run and after an error strewn first 20 mins by both sides we were first to draw blood. Cameron Thomas crashing over from short range from a typically combative burst, Ben Pritchard made a right hash of the conversion but we were 5-0 up. We did have the advantage of a strong wind and with the second half approaching our task was made even more arduous when Sam Smith saw yellow after cynically stopping a quick tap.
5-0 at HT on a fairly forgettable first 40 with both sides struggling to put anything of note together. The second half however saw Waunarlywdd get off to a strong start and soon their pressure saw Cameron Thomas pick up a yellow and see us down to 13 players. Waun soon took advantage and crossed out for a converted try to take the lead 7-5. Our uncanny knack for self combustion was further ramped up when Ben P recieved another yellow to take us down to 12!!
That wasn’t it though as after a bout of handbags Harry Maynard and their 9 saw yellow. We could have gone down to 11 but by time the mayhem was over Sam was back on so it was 12 v 14 . Waun were not to be held back however and crossed again this time for a converted try and take a 12-5 lead. Up against it now we tried to fight back and breaks by Jay Jones and a scintillating run by Ben P that could have gone to more if he’d found his support runners offered some hope. It was not to be however as a last minute Waun try gave a final score of 19-5 to them and saw our unbeaten start to the campaign well and truly ended.
Some days you are the rooster boys and some the feather duster but the good news is we go again next week in a tough encounter versus Morriston and a chance to redeem yourselves.
Onwards and Upwards boys.
