Yesterday, I watched Death of a Tea Master, by Kei Kumai
It is a fascinating film that tells the (true) story of Sen no Rikyū, Japan's greatest tea ceremony master of the 16th century. —For political and moral reasons, but above all due to the principles governing the Way of Tea, he found himself at odds with the Taiko Toyotomi Hideyoshi—leading the Taiko to first exile him and then order him to commit seppuku.
The situation is far more complex than that, but I don’t want to give away any spoilers, in case you decide to watch the film (which, incidentally, is very hard to find via streaming).
Toshirō Mifune is Sen no Rikyū.
It was his last major film, and he is magnificent in it !
Restrained, using absolute economy of expression, hieratic, and though charged with a vibrant tension, he is at the pinnacle of his art.
Knowing he was already gravely ill, one feels that this role was his swan song—and that he was fully aware of it...
