Don’t mistake my curiosity & joy lovin’ as some sort of airy fairy abstraction.

It’s actually about brain chemistry.

I didn’t devote an entire module of EMPOWER to mindset because it’s kinda nice

I did it because it UNDERPINS EVERYTHING.

And it might just be the difference between accents working for you or not.

Science tells us that CURIOSITY & JOY actually CREATE the CONDITIONS for CONNECTION 🙃

They create the conditions for LEARNING & GREAT ACTING and, thus, for those ACCENTS to start FEELING FREE! 🙃đŸŒșđŸ’«

“I’ve always struggled with accents, both technically and from a confidence perspective, so joining a group intensive initially felt quite daunting. However, Maeve quickly put me at ease with a pitch-perfect blend of masterclasses & workshops.

The delicate balance between learning & exploration created a unique opportunity to broaden my understanding of accents, starting with my own. This turned out to be one of my favourite aspects of EMPOWER: treating my voice with the same care and attention I would normally reserve for studying another accent, transforming my “accent-learning” process along the way. It would never have occurred to me that interrogating my own vocal habits & idiosyncrasies with such gentle curiosity would have such a big impact on how I approach different accents.

EMPOWER was also my first experience of “model work” which, instead of facing the potentially limitless enormity of a new accent, allowed me to mine the depths of a short extract from an accent that I would like to emulate, using this as a gateway into the wider accent. This has been the most interesting, fruitful & FUN approach to tackling an accent I have encountered so far and will, without doubt, form the basis of all my accent work going forward. Now, instead of viewing another accent with fear and trepidation, I feel free to approach it with curiosity and play.

These words, “curiosity” & “play”, are words that you will hear regularly in Maeve’s sessions, a testament to her holistic, acting-forward approach that never loses sight of the fact that an accent is a living, breathing thing that, like character work, exists as much in the body as in the mind. Perhaps even more so.

Working with Maeve has been a completely transformative process — one that I cannot wait to repeat. Thank you so much for such an incredible, EMPOWERING experience.” ~ Sophie Thomas

It’s been so special to witness Sophie shift from seeking certainty & building towards trust instead: trust in herself, her understanding and her approach.

Stay curious, Soph! It looks good on you! đŸ™ƒđŸ’«

A certainty-seeking
approach to accents
& an uncertainty-championing
approach to acting
will ALWAYS be at odds
with each other.

Could this be why accents never seem to work for you?

I get into it in my latest blog post (🔗 in BIO)

WTF Variety

Ranking the cast of an ensemble piece?

This is RANK. Do BETTER.

This is just the sort of BS that has the actors who come to me PARALYSED.

Terrified that their accent is going to be called out in some awful clickbaity review.

And it frustrates me no end because it’s that very fear that makes them sound bad (read: uncomfortable AF)

I’ve lost count of the number of press requests that I’ve gotten asking to critique someone’s accent (usually one that we’ve just heard the teensiest snippet of in a trailer) because some jerk with a keyboard fancied conjuring up a bit of drama at the expense of the cast, creatives & crew who work tirelessly to bring these stories to life for us.

My actor babes, I know that this particular pile of drivel doesn’t have an accent focus but please take it as a lesson in the fact that, you can and never will please everyone, not least those armchair experts, accent or no accent.

So don’t waste your time or precious creative joy trying to!

I haven’t seen The Odyssey yet but I’m super excited to.

And, for what it’s worth, Tom is one of the kindest & hardest working actors I’ve had the privilege of working with. The man is seriously talented.

Even if this turns out not to be his best work, he doesn’t deserve this.

No one does.

Come on. Don’t buy into this đŸ’©

Our art and artists deserve better.

We deserve better.

Let’s demand it.

Starting to believe you’ll never be able to do accents? EMPOWER > EMBODY > CONNECT might be just what you need

Witnessing Jordan’s acting in an accent confidence grow over the last few months as he’s worked through this programme has been 👌😍

A completely transformed relationship with accents? And a joyful one at that?! đŸ„ł đŸ„°

THAT’S why this programme is exists.

Are your accents unravelling mid scene? Or do you just always feel disconnected when you try to act in them?

PLEASE ask yourself this (& be honest!):

Have you *actually* worked to embody them?

I’m Maeve. I’m a voice, accent dialect coach with over 15 years industry experience and I’m obsessed with helping you act in accents without the disconnect.

And I can tell you that a lot of accent training doesn’t hold up in auditions or on set because, whilst you might have focused on identifying, and even mastering, the features of a new accent, you haven’t followed through on the next step of working to make those features *habitual.*

And if you skip this step, the accent won’t be automatic and will likely fall apart under pressure or, even worse, you’ll never feel connected in it at all.

If you want to feel truly at home in a new accent you need to work to *gain ownership* of the new features.

It’s simply not enough to identify what those features are and where they crop up in your script.

You *also* need to get them firmly rooted in your muscle memory.

Only then will you feel free to use them to communicate.

This is the focus of EMBODY, the second phase of my three phase approach to acting in an accent.

EMPOWER > EMBODY > CONNECT equips actors a trusted, reliable approach to acting in accents - one that you can use time and time again; character after character; accent atter accent.

🔗 in bio if you want to out more about how to make those new features embodied so you feel free to communicate (act!) through them.

Thought Friday’s rant deserved a place on the grid.

Still fuming on behalf of Lara Bird SNP

Actors,
putting your characters
into accent boxes
might just be what’s killing
your ability to find & truly connect
with their voices & accents.

It might work for linguists
or even in casting offices
(the latter is debatable IMO

more on that another day
)
but I’d be VERY surprised
if it’s working for you!

Clearly isn’t working
for those rank
opinion columnists either
