Breastfeeding + free-diving 🧜♀️
A common questions amongst the mamas is ‘can I free-dive whilst breastfeeding?’
As always, my response is, you know your body the best, and you are at the helm of the ship 🛳️ with this decision.
I’ve found free-diving whilst breastfeeding (son is 10months old) to be mostly okay as long as I’m hydrated, have pumped or fed before hand, my wetsuit isn’t too tight, I’ve eaten, and I definitely will never dive again with the slightest sign of infection or mastitis (was not a kind experience).
Here’s a few bits of information that may help you with your decision making:
🐚 Breastfeeding does not make freediving unsafe
🐚 Pressure changes do not affect breast milk
🐚 Breast milk is not “contaminated” by breath-holding
🐚 You may fatigue faster — breastfeeding + freediving both demand energy
🐚 Hydration is essential (dehydration can affect milk supply)
🐚 Electrolytes can be helpful for longer dive days
🐚 Feed or pump before diving for comfort
🐚 Stay conservative with depth and duration
🐚 Avoid pushing limits or training to exhaustion
🐚 Cold water increases energy demand — recovery matters
🐚 Do not dive if you think you have an infection or mastitis
🐚 Temporary supply dips are usually hydration or fatigue related
🐚 Listen to your body — capacity changes in this season
🐚 Gentle, nourishing diving supports the nervous system best
🧜♀️This is general information, not medical advice. Always dive within your training and personal limits.
