IMNZ done for another year. After a summer that was really quite hard to train through for most, I was really grateful for a race with good conditions. It was a full on day for me tracking 18 athletes, and by the end of it all I felt my head might explode! Very stressful as I care so much about these people. So thankful at the end that all got through safely, always such a relief. So many good things, but also so many stories that show just how hard it is to get onto that start line in good shape, there really is no one that had the perfect build up, but it's staying calm and playing the cards you are dealt to the best of your ability on the day, and no one showed that better than Aimee. Aimee was battling a likely virus in the days prior, so she did have to change her plan somewhat, she is experienced so she knew to just rein things in and be as sensible as possible for as long as possible out there. So knowing that, her result is even more staggering. 1st place Female 60-64 in 12 hr 20, in fact 1st place any female 55+. Some may have seen that IM puts out a list of age graded times post race, Aimee is 7th place on the list of females. Her age graded time is 9 hr 55. Just so impressive. Jeremy completed his first full distance in 16 years, finishing 8th place (45-49) in 10 hr 14.The first timers in the full distance all did me proud, Jon (35-39) finished in 10 hr 2 min!, Andy (30-34) in 10 hr 38 min, Tom (45-49) 11 hr 4 min, Allan who obviously loves to challenge himself training for IM with a newborn in the family born just before Christmas finished in 14 hr 23, Amy (30-34) who never told me she was racing on her birthday finished in 15 hr 8 min. Then Hamish another amazing story (coming back from knee surgery from a bad ski accident) just amazed me with a 12 hr 44 min race. Then special mention to Christine and Kirstin who both unfortunately came down ill on race week, both battled through to get to that finish line. In the half distance again the first timers all did me proud. Anna, Dylan, Jack, Ross and Evie all racing strong, alongside Chris, Hamish and Karen. Special mention to Ross who had an incident with a sheep the week prior, badly damaged glute, but managed things well and got through his first half ironman in 6 hr 14. I also want to mention Logan who had been training for his first half IM. On Tuesday of race week, he came down very ill and made the sensible decision not to travel to the race. I know how hard that is to make that decision having travelled many times to race and not being able to start, but even worse when you are training for your very first half ironman. I also have experience of making the wrong decision of trying to race when very ill. In 2009 I raced the swim and bike portion of Challenge Roth when I was very ill with the flu. I just couldn't give up on my ambition to race. I collapsed after the bike and I did damage to my heart from trying to race. As hard as it is at the time, when you are very ill, you do need to make that decision and always put your long term health first. When Logan does cross the half ironman finish line when in good health it will be all the more sweet.

The nerves are really starting to tingle, 2 sleeps to go until the biggest day of the year for me following these special athletes who have trained so hard to be on the start line. In the full distance, Allan, Amy, Andy, Jon and Tom will be lining up for the first time alongside more experienced racers Aimee, Christine, Hamish, Jeremy and Kirstin, while in the 70.3 we have first timers Anna, Dylan, Evie, Jack and Ross, alongside Chris, Hamish and Karen. Until the gun goes off all will be feeling those nerves, but it looks like they are in for a brilliant day. After what I would describe as an inadequate summer filled with rain, wind, cold and a tiny bit of heat it looks like perfect conditions for fairly calm racing out there on Saturday.

Congrats to Tanya on her amazing race at Challenge Wanaka in the weekend. Many of you will be interested in how Tanya got on, as back in November she had a scary collapse at the finish of a half marathon due to dehydration (something that had never happened before). It would be very easy to be scared off endurance racing for quite some time, but not Tanya. We put together a great plan for her to go and enjoy Challenge Wanaka. Tanya is very fortunate to have a daughter (Jade) who is a nutritionist and endurance sports athlete herself, so we could make sure Tanya had the confidence that she would nail things this time, a few small tweaks can make a huge difference. Coming out of the water Tanya had the 3rd fastest swim in her age group (55-59). Onto the 90k bike ride and the main goal was to be conservative on the very challenging Wanaka course and just focus on getting in the fluids, sodium and carbs that she needed, and keep the heart rate under control, pacing was critical here. She absolutely nailed it, as once on the 21k run she churned through the course, running the 4th fastest run split (55-59) and most importantly really enjoying herself. Her goal had been to go sub 8 hr, but she actually went sub 7.5 hr! Just awesome.

All the best to Tanya, Tom and Allan who will be taking part at Challenge Wanaka this weekend. It's the 20th Anniversary of this amazing race, really hard to believe it has been that long!!

Great to see a new event coming soon which will extend NZ's triathlon season out to May! https://akl100.nz/ offers the 100k triathlon which is growing in popularity (2k swim, 80k bike, 18k run) plus 50k and 21k triathlon options and aquabike and duathlon options as well.

Lots of people racing this weekend in lots of amazing events! The last few weeks Whitney has raced in Tauranga and Tanya at Blue Lake in Rotorua, both kicking off the year nicely. Tomorrow Andy, Annalis and Logan will be racing at the Corsair Classic Olympic distance. Chris will be taking on the T100 distance in Wellington, Karen will be racing the SHE triathlon in Auckland, Jack the Clevedon Half marathon, and Edwin the 10 mile in Dungarvan/Ireland! It's looking like a much more settled weekend weather wise so it should be fairly good racing conditions all over.

Amazing weekend watching the action of the Epic swim. Very challenging conditions, especially for those that raced the 2.5k on Saturday afternoon. I've never personally seen the lake so choppy, and I know for many it was a big struggle out there. But I always think it is great to have a race like that, so whatever happens in the week of your A race you won't be phased as you know you can battle your way through. In the 5k it started out very pleasant but started to pick up with each lap. Special shout out to my son Ben who raced his first open water races. Ben is a really good long distance pool swimmer, but open water is all very new to him. There was a Swim NZ event within the event, which had very different rules regarding wetsuits. Eg 18 degrees and over no wetsuit, hard for a triathlete to get her head around! So Ben did the Swim NZ event for 2.5k with the no wetsuit. He finished 2nd in his age group (13-14) in a sprint finish, and 3rd overall, then 4th overall if you also include those in wetsuits, so a bit confusing! He did around 33.5 minutes. Then in the 5k I was worried he wouldn't handle so far in cold water without a wetsuit so I didn't put him in the Swim NZ championship event. He did 1.06 in wetsuit and finished 1st for those with wetsuits (right alongside legend Brent Foster which was very cool), then when you include all times he was 6th overall in the field. Pretty good for his first crack, very proud Mum. I was surprised how easily he seemed to handle the chop with no experience, and he had a great weekend and now feels he could come back and take on 5k without a wetsuit. Also shout out to Logan who placed 3rd in the 40-44 division in the 5k event.

Absolutely stunning in Taupo, ready for the Epic swim this weekend, water is a bit choppy, but as beautiful and clear as ever, always so calming to swim in there, even when a little rough. All the best to Anna, Kirstin, Tanya who will be taking on the 2.5k swim on Saturday afternoon. And then to Evie and Logan taking on the 5k swim on Sunday morning.

I can't believe this day has finally come. Back in Feb 2011, I had just been for a swim and gym down at the old QE2 complex, a special place that I had spent so much of my childhood and held so many memories for me. Little did I know that morning it would be my last time to set foot in there, minutes later the earthquake that hit destroyed the complex. I was pregnant with my eldest son at the time (now himself a top swimmer), he is now 14 years old and our new pool Parakiore is finally open! He's never raced in a long course pool, and only ever trained in one a handful of times, and now finally I will get to see him race in a 50m pool in about a months time. Today I had my first swim and it was honestly emotional, I had a little cry as I was swimming along with a whole lane to myself. There is just something so special about a long course pool compared to the horrible short course pools. The whole complex is just amazing, I was so impressed and hard to believe we now have this facility in Christchurch.

Don't forget about this race coming up on Feb 1st. Very similar to Challenge Wanaka bike terrain, so great prep for that, or IMNZ/70.3 with the slight change of bike course, this would be great preparation. And for those building for Sea to Sky at the end of the summer, the short distance event would be perfect preparation. Also kids aquathon, Junior kids race and duathlons on offer.

Next up on our local calendar is the Canterbury Classic Triathlon & Duathlon on Feb 1st. Help us keep this awesome event thriving by encouraging others to enter (as well as entering yourself). This is one of only a few olympic distance races that remain in NZ on what is a brilliant course.

All women racing this weekend! Tomorrow 5 athletes are taking on the very challenging Rotorua Suffer course. Alize, Louise and Sophie (half distance), Anna (quarter distance), Kirstin (half aquabike). For some this signals the end of a good build which is a perfect time just before Christmas, and for others it is a good hard training event for later season races. Then on Sunday Annalis is racing the Sprint distance at Waitomo Triathlon (Christchurch). Looking like nice conditions for all racing out there. Have a good weekend!

Lots of really cool events taking place this weekend! Saturday Tom is taking on a 137k gravel race in Waimate while Ross and Anna are racing the Around Lake Taupo challenge. Then on Sunday Andy is racing the Oxman Triathlon, Chris is racing the Wellington Standard distance championships and Helen is running 21k at the Omaha half marathon. Photo is of the beautiful Oxman swim course. I usually have more athletes racing this amazing race, this year Andy will have my full support! but really cool to hear that the race is growing really well with record entries.
