🌍🎈 Competition Area

The Gordon Bennett Cup has no predefined route, but it does have boundaries.
Before the race begins, the official competition area is defined based on current airspace restrictions, national regulations, AIPs and active NOTAMs.

🟦 Blue countries: Flights and landings are generally permitted, subject to local regulations.
🟥 Red countries: No overflight and no landing allowed.

For the teams, these borders are much more than lines on a map. They shape routing decisions, altitude changes and weather strategies throughout the race.

During the Gordon Bennett, every team is tracked live with position, altitude and trajectory. What looks like a simple line reflects complex decisions. Some teams go direct, others position themselves for better wind systems hours later. In many cases, the decisive move only becomes clear much later. Following the tracking means understanding strategy in real time.

Preparations in Gladbeck are moving forward step by step. Coordination with authorities, setup planning for the launch field, infrastructure, media areas, public zones and many organisational details are already in full swing behind the scenes.

A lot happens before the first balloon even inflates and the countdown is starting to feel very real now 👀

A launch site with real strategic relevance.

Gladbeck is one of the few established gas balloon sites worldwide with direct hydrogen infrastructure, making the logistics for an event of this scale significantly easier. This is not just a launch location, but a key part of the international ballooning scene. This coming weekend, the site celebrates its 25 year anniversary and continues a long tradition of hosting major events.

Distance decides everything. All teams launch from the same field at the same time. ⏱🌎

From that moment on, there is no route and no waypoints. Pilots navigate by selecting different wind layers at different altitudes, where direction and speed can change completely within a few hundred meters.

The challenge is not speed, but choosing the right path over time while managing ballast, gas and endurance. Every decision has long term consequences.

A concept that shaped gasballooning. The Coupe Aéronautique Gordon Bennett was founded in 1906 by James Gordon Bennett Jr. with one clear idea: all teams start under identical conditions and only skill, endurance and decision making define the outcome. No predefined routes, no waypoints, no external advantages. This principle still defines the race today and is why it is considered the most demanding competition in gas ballooning.
