Bessy Beck Trout Fishery Bessy Beck is open six days a week. closed Mondays. Great fly fishing on three lakes The site of the fish farm is next to the village of Newbiggin-on-Lune.

What was originally a boggy field was excavated and formed by the previous owner Simon Norman-Ballantyne over a period of almost twenty years. The farm is fed by water from the Bessy Beck, a small stream which rises on the nearby Howgills, and is the source of the river Lune. Bessy Beck was taken over in 2003 by Ian and Shelley Riddell who have developed the site into a first class fly fishing venue

The hatchery was closed in 2005 due to water shortages in the summer months and now all rainbow trout are bought in as fingerlings from Swinton trout farm in Yorkshire, run by Josh Riddell

The quality of the water ensures hard fighting sport fish and what are recognised by a number of leading chefs, as some of the best table fish in the North West.

Latest from Bessy Beck, cold and strong east winds had a detrimental effect on fishing during the middle of April, the fish were feeding well on the surface when the wind dropped. Richard Newbolt fished hard and caught over 20 during his three day visit. Dave Scott had 15 one day using buzzers and returned later in the week to catch 17 on small Griffith Gnat. Howard Croston used Beetles to catch 12 during a short session. Swinton Trout farm stocked fish into all three lakes on Monday 27th and these have encouraged the resident fish to start taking and huge catches were recorded. Stephen Hogg had his best ever day catching 29 mainly on a Blue Flash Damsel and J Johnston caught 21 during a 4 hour session. On 29th Robbie Cardwell caught 32 in 4 hours using an Egg Fly and later in the day, fishing into the evening, Lee Cunningham returned over 30 using a Black Beatle. The strong East winds are continuing, however they are getting warmer and more flies can be seen on
on the surface, the first Hawthorn flies were seen 30th of April heralding good dry fly fishing. The extending daylight hours are making a late session possible, and the evening rise is on. We are not open on Mondays

More updates from Bessy Beck, the week began with morning frosts and sunny days, catches improved as the days became warmer and from Thursday the fish were feeding on the surface in numbers for the first time this year. Marlon Proudfoot had a good day on Wednesday with 15 and David Cruikshank caught 12 to 7 lb on buzzers. On Thursday Brian Wood caught 20 on a black beetle, only to be beaten by his son Marcus who caught 31 to 9lb using an assortment of lures. Later that day with a mild east wind the fish were rising freely and Ian McGregor caught 14 on a CDC emerger. Frost and sun slowed catches on Friday when Lee Graham worked hard for 13 on buzzers. A busy day on Saturday saw Robbie Ferris catching 26 and his father caught 12 on buzzers, other anglers found it difficult. Stu Griffiths came along late in the day to catch 11 on a white buzzer. Despite high angling pressure on Sunday but helped by overcast conditions, a number of anglers had good catches. Jessie Wright caught 16 to 10lb using a lure and Glen Appleby 23 on a mix of flies.
Swinton Trout will be stocking the lakes again this week with fish from 3 to 4lbs . See you at Bessy Beck soon
