About 1-2 weeks ago I posted about adults judging the outcome instead of the intent. Then I watched this back and it was me — I got on a player for a ball that got cut out, and the wider angle showed he was doing exactly what I’d asked for earlier that session. I never asked him what he saw, and I’ve since apologized for my reaction to this mistake.

I’ve stopped bringing the whole team in to fix one player’s sticking point — the session keeps running and I pull him aside for thirty seconds instead. When the correction is private, the mistake never becomes a public event, and he goes back in playing just as freely as before.

Ask a kid in front of his team whether he understands, and he’ll say yes almost every time — not because he does, but because twelve people are waiting on him. Some corrections have to happen away from the group, or they don’t happen at all.

Ruben has gotten genuinely good at the short game, so we’ve asked him to do something he’s bad at: the long pass that changes a game instead of continuing it. He’s getting the timing wrong constantly — and we’re encouraging him anyway, because looking for a pass he couldn’t have seen four months ago is the entire first step.
