đ You donât need three months and a broken heart to figure this out. You need about five minutes and the right attention.
Hereâs what to watch for, before the appetizers even arrive.
1. How does he treat the waiter? Not you. The waiter. Youâre on your best behavior. So is he. But the person taking his order? Thatâs where the mask slips. Dismissive, impatient, doesnât say thank you â noted.
2. Does he ask you questions â and actually listen to the answers? A man who talks about himself for 45 minutes straight isnât nervous. Heâs telling you exactly who he is. Watch whether he follows up on something you said, or just waits for his turn to speak again.
3. How does he handle a small inconvenience? The table isnât right. The food takes too long. Something doesnât go his way. Does he roll with it, or does the energy in his body shift in a way that makes you want to shrink? That reaction â right there â is data.
4. Does he make you feel like your comfort matters? Is he aware of you â are you cold, are you okay, do you need anything? It doesnât have to be grand. Itâs the small attunement that tells you whether a man is capable of considering someone other than himself.
5. What does he do when you disagree â even mildly? You prefer something different. You push back gently on something he said. Does he get curious, or does he get defensive? A man who canât handle a minor difference of opinion on a first date will not suddenly become emotionally mature in a relationship.
6. Does he make you feel like you have to perform to keep his interest? This one is subtle but important. Do you feel like you can just be â or do you feel like youâre constantly working to hold his attention?
You are not there to impress him. You are there to see him.
The right man wonât require you to be smaller, funnier, or more agreeable than you actually are. Heâll be genuinely interested in who you are â including the parts that donât match his preferences perfectly.
Anyone who makes you feel otherwise in the first five minutes â believe him.
