I am running in the InFirst Bank Veterans Marathon this weekend and wanted to share some race week tips. For me there are four areas to address and I will share one today and then one each day for the next three days.
# 1 The taper. A taper is when you decrease running volume while keeping most of the intensity. You want to be fresh for the race, not exhausted. The length of the taper corresponds with the distance of your race. Longer race, longer taper. Tapers are necessary because they help to increase glycogen stores, decrease you chance of getting injured and give your muscles and connective tissues a chance to repair.
During the taper you should be getting a good amount of sleep, fueling properly and staying well hydrated, no matter what season you are racing in. Tapering is not just applied to your running but to your total energy expenditure. As you decrease your running volume it may seem like you are not doing enough to stay fit, but you will not lose fitness during a taper.
The taper is definitely an important part of a successful race experience.
