We end our self-love challenge with a topic that is really important for us. Many people (men & women of all sizes & shapes) struggle with body positivity. Body positivity is a social movement focused on the acceptance of all bodies, regardless of size, shape, skin tone, gender, & physical abilities, while challenging present-day beauty standards as an undesirable social construct.

Earlier this month, we talked about the importance of self-talk. Self-talk & body positivity go hand in hand. Consistent negative self-talk has a toxic impact on your psyche & well-being & consistently trash-talking the way your body looks has the same impact on your psyche & well-being. On the other side of that coin, consistently appreciating your body & thanking it for what it does each day helps you feel good about your body!

It’s easier said than done, especially if you’ve grooved a habit of picking apart the way you look. As we said earlier, forming a habit can take anywhere from 18-254 days of consistent practice. If forming a habit is that difficult, did you think breaking one would be easy? Of course not! Take baby steps.
1. Monitor your thoughts. When you catch yourself speaking disparagingly about your body, change the narrative & focus on something you like about your body.
2. Talk to your body the way you’d speak to your best friend. You’d never tell your best friend that he/she was a fat pig, would you? Of course not! So, why would you be so mean to yourself?
3. Negativity attracts negativity. Avoid getting into bitch fests with your friends about your bodies. It’s easy to feed the flame when one person starts. Instead of joining in, try to steer the conversation to a more positive tone.

It’s important to remember that body positivity is not the same thing as being “blissfully unaware.” We are not suggesting that you ignore health or medical issues. You still need to go to the doctor for your regular check-ups or see someone if something doesn’t feel right with your body.

Who doesn't love pizza? The best part about making pizza at home is that it's a) more cost-effective and b) you have total control over the ingredients you use and the prep of your meal.

Earlier in the month, we talked about the benefits of Vinyasa or Hatha Yoga, but today we’re bringing you more information on two of Serena’s favorite styles - Yin and Restorative. While these two styles may not offer you the strength and endurance training that Vinyasa or Hatha do, they come with their own worthwhile benefits that make them just as important as Vinyasa or Hatha.

Both Yin and Restorative Yoga are more “chill” than Vinyasa and Hatha, but what’s the difference?

Yin yoga is a practice that focuses on stretching the connective tissue in order to lengthen them and help release built-up tension. It evolved out of a practice called ‘Taoist Yoga’ which incorporated elements of Taoist philosophy into yoga. The name ‘Yin’ yoga comes from Yin/Yang philosophy which draws attention to the balance between opposing forces. More energetic styles of yoga like vinyasa yoga would be considered ‘yang’ while yin yoga postures are meant to balance these energetic practices with calm, deep stretches. The poses work with the energy meridians in your body to help increase flexibility, improve joint mobility, and release trauma in the body.

Restorative yoga is a calming practice that relies on blocks, straps, sandbags, bolsters and blankets to create a passive release of mind and body. As the name suggests, restorative yoga brings our body into a state of healing or restoration. In simple terms, we can view our nervous system in two different modes: One mode is our ‘fight or flight‘ mode, which is constantly stimulated in the modern world. The other is a calming state. When our nervous system registers safety, it kicks off all sorts of healing processes within our body. Restorative yoga helps to bring us into that state of balance without any active stretch or engagements in the body.

Did you know that studies have shown that reading as little as 6 minutes per day can improve your quality of sleep, reduce stress, and sharpen mental acuity? Reading strengthens the neural circuits and pathways of our brain while lowering heart rate and blood pressure.

We suggest reading for several minutes each night before bed. We also recommend that you go with a good old-fashioned hard copy of your reading material. The blue light emitting from your handheld devices can actually delay the release of melatonin and increase alertness, resetting the body’s internal clock to a later schedule. We want to get more quality sleep, not less!

An important thing to keep in mind is that not all dark chocolate is created equal. We suggest looking for organic chocolate with at least 60-70 percent cacao. This will not only help guarantee that you are getting a rich source of antioxidants, but also ensure you get fewer additives, such as cream and sugar, which can have the opposite desired effect on your health and waistline.

Also, be sure to check the ingredients list. The list should be relatively small and every single item should be recognizable (for example: Organic fair-trade cacao, organic unrefined coconut sugar, organic fair-trade cocoa butter, etc.). Avoid any products listing mysterious ingredients.

Our favorite brands are Hu Kitchen, Justin’s, Theo Chocolate, and Alter Eco.

Another important thing to remember is that when we promote the benefits of dark chocolate, we are not encouraging you to inhale six candy bars. Even the best organic chocolates will have sugar, loaded with calories, and easy to overeat.  Bear this in mind when you’re reaching for this yummy snack. MODERATION is the key! Try 1-2 squares of a chocolate bar after dinner and savor them.

Some people (Serena’s mom included) “don’t like the taste of water.” We’ll admit that we’re not like those people, BUT if you don’t like the taste of something, what are the odds that you’re going to want to eat or drink it? Zero. As we’ve stated, water is absolutely vital to our bodies’ functions, so if the taste is what’s preventing you from getting enough water each day, let’s fix that. Adding lemon to your water not only flavors the water, but it has a slew of other health benefits as well:
Aids in digestion
Reduces inflammation
Good source of vitamin C, which boosts your immune system
Pectin fiber helps fight hunger cravings
High levels of potassium, which is good for heart health & brain & nerve function
Helps keep skin blemish-fee
Enhances enzyme function & stimulates the liver
Energy booster
